Hi everyone,

About a month ago when I was running one of my routine virus scans and I had a blackout/power outage, and ever since then my computer has been extremely slow with over 3 minute boot times, and 3x slower when running normal programs. The hard disk drive light on the case consistently stays red even if the computer is not being used, and it didn't do this before.

I have tried chkdsk /r (it took 3days!), virus scans, System File Checker but to no avail. Does anyone here have any recommendations (I'm not very good with computer) or could it be something physically wrong with the computer?

Here is my system information: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/cWvw5fcUMT6eEdzIpWrCz4s
And my power supply is the Corsair HX620W

Thanks

Welcome to BC forums. :) Please post the computer model next time. Have you tried booting to safemode to check on the difference and running a diagnostic test for the hard drive?

consistently stays red even

Hard drive led light is normally green or red? Were you able to backup your files in any way?

On top of what jhayz has posted , I can't help but notice this -

Windows XP Home 32-bit SP2

Hi mate -
This is from your posted link - Is there a reason for not updating to XP SP3 ?

Also there seems to be heaps of M/soft updates missing from a Speccy Scan, under Hotfixes -
You just have Hotfixes, and nothing listed where all the updates usually are ???

Thanks -

Hey jhayz thanks for the reply,

My PC was built by a small computer shop, so no model sadly, I'll try to find the case name and I'll report back.

I tried booting into safe mode and the boot is much faster at about only 20 seconds! Also when at the desktop in safemode it seems much faster and more responsive, and the led light would only blink occasionaly. I also ran a hard drive diagnostic test using Seatools [ www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/ ] and did the basic tests and it passed all of them, is there any other tools you recommended?

The hard drive led light is red when in use and before the blackout blinked occasionally when not in use. I also backuped important documents to a external harddrive, which was not plugged in at the time of the blackout. I can still access files and folders and have not seem to have lost anything but the computer is just really slow.

On top of what jhayz has posted , I can't help but notice this -

Hi nokojon thanks too for the reply,

Regarding why I am still on SP3 I honestly dont know  why I'm yet to update, when I got the computer in 2009 the people I bought it from told be not to update because they said they were having a number of problems with it and to wait to Windows 7 cameout, which they would give us a free upgrade, but that never occured because the business closed down <_< , and I've never updated since. But I'll be sure to download SP3 ASAP

I checked about the hotfixes in add/remove programs and found around 25 hotfixes for xp, and like 100 XP updates and security updates, maybe something is wrong with speccy?

Cheers again for your replies

But I'll be sure to download SP3 ASAP

Please read http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic146857.html for B/Computer info on XP3 update -
Make sure the item at the top of Add / Remove (Show Updates) is ticked -

Can you please list the date (roughly) of the last item in your M/soft Updates, as it should have been about 12 days ago (10 July) -
You can always just post another Speccy to be sure it is reading right - Make sure the program fully loads (allow 3 - 5 mins) -

This is mine http://speccy.piriform.com/results/GIXD2p4XdWMUmDsJRIHxV4J and you can see all the most recent items listed with dates - The other items are for daily Microsoft Security Essentials (my Antivirus) updates -

Thanks -

Hi again noknojon :)

I tried to install SP3 following these instructions http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows//cc164204.aspx , but it didn't seem to work and it would flash a blue screen after the XP splash screen. So I panicked and ran through safe mode and removed it through Add/Remove programs. Now the computer loads successfully. Should I leave it or would SP3 be helpful in fixing this problem.

In Add/Remove programs there is like 30 hotfixes added on 22/7/2012, but after that it drops straight down to hotfixes added in 2010. I dont know whats happening there  because I regularly did updates, and yesterday I saw hotfixes from 2011 and early in 2012. I did another speccy and it found a Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - added in July 2012 http://speccy.piriform.com/results/xJD6ZFGwWfjxBNnmwWi8B57

Thanks again for your response

Do you have a M/soft Sticker on the computer with a number on it ?

Do any of the numbers match any of the ones in the reply ?
It is just odd that I cannot match any of those codes -

Please note that I am NOT saying that your Windows is not legal, or anything like that -
Just trying to match codes to help your computer

Hi again,

I checked but I couldn't find any stickers strangely enough. XP was pre-installed from the place we bought it, and I dont think we even got an install disk.

OK - First - From jhayz above - Hard drive led light is it normally green or red or blue ??

NEXT - A quick look to see if any programs got fried -
For now - Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Also Please download Farbar Service Scanner to desktop and run it on the computer.
•Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
•Press "Scan".
•It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
•Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

You posted - "The hard disk drive light on the case consistently stays red even if the computer is not being used, and it didn't do this before" Not unusual

Takes about 15 to 20 mins for a quick look - What part (state) of Aust are you in ??

EDIT -
Did you alter the MiniToolBox post in any way, or just copy it as it appeared ??
