Good day!

I just have a problem with my laptop. It's not working well and keeps hanging up.It states that the error was due to
it's environment condition or the drive is nearly expiring but it was bought 3 yrs already. .I tried the chkdsk
but it takes forever to finish. When I tried to check it to an IT it, they told me to reformat the comp and change the drive and they also need it's OS cd, but I don't have it anymore.
Do I really need it's OS cd or is there no other way.

Thanks!

First thing is to make sure you have backed up all your data files. Have them run a diagnostic test for the drive first before making any plans of restoring your windows system. It is not worth reinstalling if the drive is failing. You will need an XP/Vista/Win 7 disc, depending on what your laptop used to run or is compatible with. Another alternative OS which is popular and free is Linux https://www.linux.com/directory/Distributions/desktop

Can you tell us the brand of the laptop? might be a good idea to see wich brand it is to see how their recovery partition is done.

From the SONY support page for this model ... the answer is pretty clearly presented ....

SONY
VAIOŽ Notebook Computer
Model # VPCEB11FM/WI
Support: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=VPCEB11FMWI

ERROR: S.M.A.R.T. (SMART) drive failure message occurs during boot up.

ERROR: S.M.A.R.T. (SMART) drive failure message occurs during boot up.
Solution
If an error appears stating: S.M.A.R.T. status bad - backup and replace , then the hard drive has detected damage to the disk and failure of the drive is imminent. Back up all data on the disk immediately. The hard drive will need to be replaced to resolve this issue.
NOTE: This error may also be referred to as a Smart Drive Failure.

The hard drive has failed: You need to replace it.

My idea would also just replace the drive, if you need a cd u can surely get sources of one, just make sure you use the key underneath your system.

Good thing on this system is the key would work without needing to recover it

If the key does not activate it will be a bit less easy as you will need to copy your backup partition with ghost.

Best idea just try new drive, if u want your data transferred later, there are some 2.5" HDD cases available for your hard drive wich you can place your harddrive in and use it as usb!

Goodluck!
