I just noticed today that in Windows Task Manager, I see 'svchost.exe' consuming lots of memory (Task Manager reports 265,376K). I look at Task Manager a lot in order to manage memory in general (there's only 1GB on this box), and I've never seen a 'svchost.exe' consuming this much before. It grows until available memory [under 'Physical Memory (K)' in the Performance tab] gets down to under 10000, and the machine slows to a crawl while it furiously swaps.

I fired up "Process Explorer" (Sysinternals), and I can see the offending 'svchost.exe' hanging underneath 'services.exe' (along with plenty of other services). Sometimes, the offender has 'AcroRd32.exe' or 'wuauclt.exe' hanging off of it (but the child processes don't consume anywhere near as much memory as 'svchost.exe').

When I mouse over the 'svchost.exe', it shows...

Command Line:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Path:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\svchost.exe (netsvcs)
Services:
COM+ Event System [EventSystem]
Help and Support [helpsvc]
Network Location Awareness (NLA) [Nla]
Remote Access Connection Manager [RasMan]
System Event Notification [SENS]
Task Scheduler [Schedule]
Telephony [TapiSrv]
Windows Management Instrumentation [winmgmt]
Windows Time [w32time]

The system is Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3. It's got a Pentium® 4 CPU 3.40GHz; 3.39 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM. {Yes, it's an old clunker... but it works for me to RDP into my office computer... ^_^;;}

Back to Process Explorer: When I right-click 'svchost.exe' and choose "Properties..." and go to the TCP/IP tab, I see several entries for TCP connections from my system to the remote address 'smpt.wiredtechologys.com:http' ("LAST_ACK"). I also see other remote addresses appearing and disappearing to questionable addresses (some TCP/IP addresses, some domain names I don't recognize).

The TCP/IP connections make me think I've got some kind of nefarious process running on here.

What are my next steps?

Thanks in advance!

OK, I'm running the tools as requested. All but the 'aswMBR' logs are embedded below (I'll run 'aswMBR' after the reboot).

Item of note: All of a sudden, my browsers can't get to Google; I instead see, "404 Not Found ~ nginx/1.2.0"

Also, MBAM found two nasties. >_<

For what it's worth... I see that 'svchost -k netsvcs' is still consuming lots of memory, and still connecting to unknown IPs/hosts.

However, I ran MBAM a 2nd time and it didn't find anything:

Please, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways and click on "Fix it" button to reset your "hosts" file.
Follow all prompts.

I followed the "Let me fix it for myself" process. I renamed the old file to 'hosts.old', and created a new 'hosts.' file.

Note, "malachi" is a fileserver on my intranet. I have it listed as a static entry in the 'hosts.' file because the rest of the devices on the network use DHCP, but I set up "malachi" to have a static IP address, and in order for file sharing to work I ended up needing to put an entry into 'hosts.'

Also note, after a few reboots Google and FireFox now get to google.com sites just fine. So I think I've resolved that small issue.

Hmm... when I look at "svchost.exe -k netsvcs" in Process Explorer, examine the 'Properties...', and look at the TCP/IP tab, I no longer see connections to oddball hosts & IPs.

In between, I had run MBAM again, except this time doing a full scan. The full scan found another hit on the C:\ drive; and while MBAM was scanning, my AVG install picked up activity with two files when MBAM when to scan them. I let AVG deal with those two, and then MBAM dealt with its find.

Seems like the bad actor has gone away, at least for now.

Meanwhile - thinking back, I had just allowed Adobe to update Flash to 11.3. Was that installer window actually the trojan? Hrm! If so, it looked completely authentic.

I can see you ran Combofix on your own.

In that case....

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
