SMART Virus Blank Start Up

Pretty self explanatory. Was renewing Norton ... got the SMART screen ... figured out it was bogus. Started taking over. Could not close it. Even with CTR ALT DEL ... was able to renew Norton but not download it. Just spent hours with Norton support ... they suggested checking with ACER ... running Windows 7 ... Acer computer. Can't get in to safe mode at all. Just keep getting a blank screen with a blinking cursor like line at the top left of the screen. Have taken battery out. Numerous times. Have tried changing boot priority no change. F8 will not work ... I'm very frustrated. Can't see any topics other than get in to Safe Mode which I can't even do! Suggestions? Level 3 at Norton to call me back. Don't think I'll get help from ACER. THANKS! Amy in Arizona

Greetings EnerGeeOne,

We need to run a diagnostic tool to extract some information from your computer. Thanks to Farbar we have a tool that may provide that information even though you can't even boot up! We will need to use a USB device for this and I will give you instructions on how to vaccinate it. This will eliminate the possibility of cross contamination from any possible autorun virus which might be on your infected computer. We don't need another sick computer.

Here is what I would like you to do, if you would. It may or may not be successful so don't be alarmed if you come to a dead end.

Panda USB Vaccine

--------------------

From a clean computer, please download and use Panda USB Vaccine.

  • Double-click on USBVaccineSetup.exe to install the program to C:\Program Files\Panda USB Vaccine.
  • Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  • When setup completes, make sure "Launch Panda USB Vaccine" is checked and click Finish to open the program.
  • Click the Vaccinate computer button. It should now show a green checkmark and confirm Computer vaccinated.
  • Hold down the Shift key and insert your USB flash drive.
  • When the name of the drive appears in the dialog box, click the button to Vaccinate USB drive(s).
  • Exit the program when done
Note: Computer Vaccination will prevent any AutoRun file from running, regardless of whether the removable device is infected or not. USB Vaccination disables the autorun file so it cannot be read, modified or replaced and creates an AUTORUN_.INF as protection against malicious code. The Panda Resarch Blog advises that once USB drives have been vaccinated, they cannot be reversed except with a format. If you do this, be sure to back up your data files first or they will be lost during the formatting process.

Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool

--------------------

I would like you to run Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to check your Master Boot Record (MBR). For this you will need a USB flash drive and start on a clean computer.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC and we will enter the System Recovery Options one of the two following ways:

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.
To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
Once you are in the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in Notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select Computer and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
    • Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
