Hello All,

I have a bunch of problems wrong with my computer but I'm hoping if I can solve this one, it might fix some of the others. Whenever I try to download updates from Windows Update it throws me a "an error has occurred while checking for new updates for your computer." error with the code 80004002.

Any idea on how to go about fixing this?

As a side note, my shut down button in the start menu is perpetually stuck with a black exclamation point inside the yellow/orange shield. When I shut down it says installing the updates, but when it reboots it'll just try to install again if I shut it down.

Re: error-code-80004002
First try this M/soft Fix It program http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9774319 Click Run and then follow the steps in the Fix it Wizard.

To Manually fix this you can follow these directions, again from M/soft -

1.Click Start, type notepad in the Start Search box, and then click notepad in the Programs list.
2.Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the Notepad window.
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S
REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S3.
- On the Notepad File menu, click Save As.
4.In the File name box, type register.bat, and then click All Files (*.*) in the Save as type box.
5.Save the register.bat file to the desktop.
6.Right-click the register.bat file, and then click Run as administrator.Collapse this imageExpand this imageIf you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
7.Try to install updates again.

Thanks for your reply,

I've done both the fix it and the manual method and neither fixed the issue upon re-running windows update.

Ive started the background intelligent transfer service with no errors and set it to automatic from manual.

The rpc service was set to started and automatic when i located it. However the rpc locator service is on manual and not started. Should I automatic and start it?
