So, I bought this 1TB external hard drive...And for some reason it's listed as 'unavailable' ??

When I went to Devices and Printer in control panel, I see it labeled as 'USB Mass Storage Device', however it won't activate as anything.

when I connected it, I went through the drivers, and everything is all good...Except I can't use the thing.

Simpletech 1TB is what I have.

-Right click Computer and select manage
-Select Disk Management from the list on the left

Does the drive show up in there? If so, is it formatted and does it have a drive letter assigned to it?

I wouldn't try to remove the drive from its case and connect it to the motherboard. Opening the case usually voids the warranty.

I went to Disk Management, and this is what I found:

right clicking it up top, everything is greyed out.

Right clicking it down below, and those are my options

anybody know what to do here??

You're drive is not being assigned a drive letter. In that same location, right click on the area that says 913.19 GB (from the bottom picture) and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths." Click the Add button and select a drive letter. It really doesn't matter which one you pick, as long as it doesn't match a letter that is already in use (they shouldn't be an option anyways).

Oops, I overlooked that in the top picture. Since there is nothing on the drive, select the option to delete the volume (do it for both the 200 MB partition and the 931 GB partition). Then right click the the drive and format it as NTFS.

hmm well, I deleted the volume, and it's disappeared. So, you know..NO way to right click it. Unless you're talking about the bottom picture, in which case I don't see any option to format

Hmmmm

oh yeah, it won't let me delete the 200MB partition...

EDIT:

wait there we go. I right clicked it, and went to Create New Simple Volume

that did the trick

Are you able to format it and assign it a drive letter now?
