Somehow my MS Word encoding got messed up and now when I open a document I get a File Conversion -10.docx preview window that has Other Encoding "Turkish (windows) highlighted.
Clicking on Windows (default) gives the same document resuts, a screen filled with little squares and other symbols, letters and numbers but no readable text.
I don't have office software anymore to attempt a repair.
Thanks

If Word/Office is not installed...then what program is used to open the document?

The default should be Notepad/Word Pad, since it should default to a .txt document.

Word 2003 default extension is .doc

Newer versions of office use the .docx extension.

Did you install this recently?

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats

Install this compatibility pack if you would like to open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations that were created in the newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Scroll down to see instructions and system requirements.

Or could your documents have been created in a newer version of word? In which case you would need to install the above software.
