Hello :) I used to consider myself pretty computer savy until my most recent trip to Best Buy. Boy have they come along way since I purchased my last desktop! So, that's why I'm here. I'm looking to start working from home & in order to do so, a new computer is a MUST! I need speed for Internet & lots of memory. My husband wouldn't mind if he could play a few games either. I don't necessarily need top of the line but I need something that won't be outdated in a year or so. Any advice on a system or a even a good place to shop for a computer? Thanks!

I was hoping more to figure out what system would work because I just stand there confused in the stores. How do I decide which is better than the others? Is Dell better than HP or Gateway? These things I don't know.

My budget for the new computer is: $1000

What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)?
Email, web browsing, some games (diablo) & working from home.
What software do you intend on using on the computer?
Not sure.
Do you play games? If so, what type of games?
Diablo
Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it?
yes, yes
Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer?
oh, yes!!!

I look at it this way.

Any modern computer will be fast enough to keep up with whatever Internet speed you have.
If you have slow internet to the house then your internet will be slow. That is where to start looking for bottlenecks.

You shouldn't really be storing pictures on the computer unless they are also backed up on something else too.

Refuse any add-on services from the store, including extended warranty.
If you want an extended warranty buy it from the manufacturer. You will be much happier that way if you do need to use it.

For your budget you should be able to get a really good computer with a nice large screen. Avoid asking the clerk what to buy, they will push what they are told to push including extended warranties and un-needed optimization services. If you feel that needs doing you an get advice for free here.

Get the model numbers and check here for advice if it is good or not.

If you decide on Dell you can probably do better buying direct from Dell over the web.

Good Luck
Roger
