Hello,
I am upgrading from a older windows 7 laptop too a new windows 7 laptop. What is the easiest way, program, or cable for a newbie to use to transfer all programs (not just data files) from one hard drive to another?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks..

You cannot transfer individual programs file for file, you need to reinstall the programs. It is possible to image Windows and clone it later, but I'm not sure how reliable this is when performed on different hardware. Data files can easily be transferred with a USB drive or over your home network.

To transfer programs...you would have to transfer drivers, settings, registry items that relate to those installed programs.

Unless you are talking about a cloned hard drive that will go into a system with the exact same hardware components...the chances of successfully using such on a different system...contain high possibilities for frustration.

is this what your after

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer Windows Easy Transfer documents programs setting and data

to transfer programs you are going to have to re install the program with keys (if required)

To see the keys of various installation go to http://www.gtopala.com/ download that on the right select Licenses. It will not collect every key. This is for reference only.
