Dvd-rw Cd-rw

Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me.When i try to use my cd dvd burner every time i put a dvd-rw in the computer its says there isn't a dvd in the slot i can burn cd's ok but not dvds .I was atempting to back up some files this morning with a dvd and it said insert cd or dvd in slot?.there memorex4,7 gb 120min. 1x-2x any help would be great! thanks

There are two main formats for the medium, DVD-WR and DVD+WR, make sure you have the right disk for your drive.

If you are using Nero you may be in the CD tab instead of the DVD tab. I have done this before and it won't prompt you, you are using the wrong media. It just says no media found. It may be that simple.
