Hi, and thanks very much!

I have a brand-new Systemax Venture 3.0 gig processor/1 gig RAM system. It's on brighthouse cable internet. Any other specs, I'll be glad to add if you need them... I went hunting a do-around to load Office 2000 (I know, I know) which was even dumber because after all this happened I found my COA & the code. The high price of being impatient!

Anyway, I picked up surfsideweb, coolwebnow, and instafinder, among about a zillion others.

I ran Yahoo antispy. Loaded Ad-aware SE, updated, ran. Loaded Spybot, updated, ran. Bought SpyDoctor, updated, ran. Have not loaded AVG, afraid it will clash too bad with the CA Antivirus that came with the computer. (Oh, ran it too.)

Right now, every one of them says it's clean. The pop-ups have diminished greatly, but I can still hear them being squashed... so here is my current Hijack This log:

Thanks for responding!

I re-ran SpyDoctor, Spybot, and Ad-aware... forgot to run Stinger, but last time after running the first three it didn't find anything. Here's my new log:

Hi Kelli, You have some nasties and it will take a bit to clean them up. First I need your help. This item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSTMON_S.EXE May be valid, but I can't find much about it. Do you know it? If not use these free online scanners to identify the item one way or another. I am going to include it in the cleanup, if you find it is a good program then pass over it and do not remove it. Please post the information for me.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Let's proceed like this and in the posted order.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Spyware Doctor may block the HJT fix we must make, please turn it off until you finish.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gimmysmileys] C:\\gimmysmileys1.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

7) If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log, the information from the free scan and any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Hi, Phil!

OK. I printed your instructions, and had some issues in the execution, but I think you did it.

1. I went to Explorer & moved HJT to the folder you suggested.

2. I have Spybot 1.4 and Ad-aware 1.06. Updated them both & ran as suggested (rebooting in the middle.) Spybot found nothing. Ad-aware found 8 items and removed them.

3. I found & d/l ewido, launched it... and had nothing but trouble. (Please note: I'm not a computer newbie, just don't like clearing the registry, etc, without help. I always turn off all the other antivirii, spybots, etc, when I use one to scan. Don't want them fighting!) I tried it 3 times, and 3 times it got to about 80%, froze, and gave me the MS "This Program must close, please Send Us a" screen of death.. It looked like to me was in the Yahoo Anti-spy quarantine folder hitting cookies at the time, but I'm not totally sure about that. Anyway, I gave up on it.

4. Spyware was already off.

5. Opened HJT, ran scan, deleted the line items as suggested. Also opened Explorer & deleted the files as listed.. Oh, except for the WIN/sys32/MSTMON_S.EXE file - turns out that's the file that talks between the CPU and my Konica Minolta Laser printer. No clue why they named it so weird...

6. Ran Windows cleanup & defragged the drive.

7. D/L ccleaner (what a nice little program!) and ran it - apparently it found no Registry issues because it didn't tell me about any, and I had every Registry box checked. Rebooted again.

8. Ran the new HJT log, it's below. But so far so good - I'm not hearing pop-ups being squished like raindrops, and my browser window keeps coming up to My Yahoo.

I'll check back of course for any advice on my setup here, but I think you fixed me! Yay!

Thanks a million,
Kelli

I am looking over your information now, but for some reason you doublespaced this log? My scanners will not scan it this way. Please post another HJT log and before you do look at the notepad, under Format. If word wrap is checked, uncheck it and post a single spaced HJT log as you did with the first one. Thanks...Phil

Here's the new log. Everything still seems to be okay.. but a little while ago I was waiting on a slow website, gave up, and attempted to close IE by clicking the red X at the top right... and it loaded 44 windows before it finally closed. What's up with that??

Anyhow, here's the latest scan. Just ran it.

Hi Kelli, looking over your comments and I will pass any that don't need comments.

3) Unusual, ewido is a major tool we all use. The plus is it's free and it does remove what it find. I have found though that now every program will run on every computer. I can live without seeing the scan, what it does is remove most stuff and if there is a bad item like a rootkit, that it can not remove we can see that fact in the log and tackly the item with other tools. If we feel like we need another look once I look at the HJT log, I have other tools we can use.

7) You need to click "Issues" then tell the program to scan. Once it finds stuff, you have to ask it to fix them. They you will get the popup window asking if you want to back up. Put the registry backup on your desktop then tell it to clean the junk. Delete the backup after a few days of running with no issues.

I went ahead and manually compressed your HJT log so I could scan it and it look clean here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/2520/how-did-i-get-infected/
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

No need to give you information about ewido, but System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

If all is well, you are good to go and safe surfing.

Thanks...pskelley

Phil,

I've been lurking about reading some of the other threads... mostly because I'm a snoop at heart and it's fun to see what's hitting other people. But I did notice that in most of the other instructions for ewido it says specifically to Uncheck the run in background & something else when loading the file - I'm pretty sure I left them checked. Would it matter?

Thanks!!

You know I have that same issue and have been looking for a couple of years for a cure. I just discussed it with a tech at Verizon who seems very sharp, and he said it is a looping effect that is caused when we do not wait until Internet Explorer to finishes one task we have asked it to do before starting another. Since he told me that, and knowing windows does need to complete a task before starting another, and I tend to be in a hurry and often do not wait until a browser window had loaded completely before setting off on something else, I have been careful to wait until one window is loaded before starting another as the tech said, and I have had not problems. I hope this works for you.

Thanks...Phil

edit: I use the same canned for all new installations of ewido as I posted for you, following those directions should have worked. Here is another tutorial: http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm
and a .pdf if you wish: http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/...oQuickGuide.pdf

since we are kind of beyond ewido, I would not worry about it unless you want to run it. If you do remember to turn it off once the trial is over, it keeps running and using resources with no benefit. Keep in mind you do get to keep the scanner and update free for as long as you like.

I am really sooo happy! I only bought this computer on the 15th, and received it last Friday.. to have all this happen was so disheartening.

I read the article on the SysRestore, will go do that in a minute.

I re-ran ccleaner on Issues, lol - there were 95 of them. I backed up a copy & let it clean them up... seems fine so far.

I'll watch my impatience on IE windows.. hehe!
