This last week when I was away and had my laptop with me (without internet connection) I noticed that my rundll32.exe was infected. I first noticed when I attempted to run games or other programs. On my first attempt, most would not run, and I would check the task manager to find rundll32.exe taking around 35~40% of my CPU, and the game process being listed but the game not running. Running the same game or program a second time would then make it work, though rundll32 would keep running in the background at high CPU usage and would remain even after I closed whatever program I was using until I manually ended its process.

Here is an example of what I have just described:

Upon arriving home and having my internet connection back, I attempted to recreate this previously mentioned situation before posting here, only to find it functioned completely normally. I experimented by disabling my network connection and sure enough this specific problem only happened when my connection was disabled. When my internet connection was enabled, everything ran normally and rundll32.exe only took a small bit of CPU usage, and it closed automatically upon exiting the game, therefore I cannot say with complete certainty the problem didn't originate quite some time ago.
Another note: Even more strangely, a program I ran earlier today (since I use hibernate instead of shut down) whose splash screen I remember NOT opening back then, suddenly opened the moment I connected to the internet now.

I searched for some information regarding this problem and found that an infected rundll32.exe will look like a blank page icon and sometimes it may hide the dllcache. This is the case with mine too, as these screenshots will show:

-My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (6.1, Build 7601)
-Whole scans with both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Microsoft security essentials have found no infections
-Partial scans with both of these focusing on system32 have also found no infections
-Individual scans with both of these on only rundll32.exe have not detected anything either

Thanks for the help. Here is my DDS log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/459864 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

1. I have given a clear description in my original post. Please refer to that one. As a note, as I mentioned earlier, since I have been connected to the internet since the time of my first post the problem has not made itself visible though if I am to disconnect from the internet it returns every time.

2. Here is my new DDS log:
NOTE: Last time I misread the instructions and performed the scan with my AV and firewall enabled, as well as my internet connection on. This time both the DDS and Attach logs have been scanned and created while all my protection and my internet connection were off as it should have been.

3. I do not have THIS laptop's windows DVD because it's an OEM machine that did not come with one (This OS is Windows 7 Home Premium x64) However I have a DVD for Windows 7 Ultimate x64 which may or may not be of any use here. Again, that DVD is NOT the original one for this laptop.

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please post the logs for my review.

Yes. Every symptom I mentioned in my first post is still there, including the unmistakable infected 'blank page' icon for rundll32.exe which is a clear giveaway.

So far I have done every scan offline (the only time when some of the symptoms happen as opposed to when I'm online) so I believe I have been posting accurate information up til now. Though it remains infected regardless of clean logs.

AV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Disabled/Updated* {9765EA51-0D3C-7DFB-6091-10E4E1F341F6}
SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/Updated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}

I just want to make sure that you do not run these two programs in real life.
They both check for the same thing and will only cause problem.

Scan is done. And no, Windows Defender is permanently turned off. I only use MSE.

Here are the results of the scan:

C:\Users\User\Desktop\ero\Translation Aggregator 0.4.9.r171\agth.dll probably a variant of Win32/AGTH.A application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\User\Downloads\asc-setup.exe a variant of Win32/Toolbar.Widgi application cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I'm fairly confident that both of these are false positives. I am also wondering if it would help detect the infection by first making sure rundll32 is running before I do some sort of scan. When I am not connected to the internet and I attempt to run most programs a single time, the programs will not run but rundll32's process will remain in my active process list with very heavy CPU usage and will not close until I manually end it. So far all scans have not been done while this is occurring, which leads me to believe it could be more difficult to detect when inactive.

Here I temporarily disabled my internet connection to recreate this symptom.
This happens every time without fail and does not close after any amount of time if not manually closed.

Also for the record as of now all original symptoms remain unfixed.

Download this Process Explorer tool.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
RUN IT AND TRY to find the Process / file that is draining your CPU.
Instructions on the help file.
Process Explorer works on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit versions of Windows for x64 processors, and Windows Vista.

Keep me posted.

Here it is
Note: At this point I had already ended Unreal Tournament (which I used to make rundll32 appear) and as always it did not allow the program to run and started taking alot of cpu. After ending UT rundll32 did not close with it but persisted and kept using massive CPU.

Well we know which program is not releasing it's process.

The file UnrealTournament.exe was scan for virus at Jotti and should have a MD5 value of

7dadcc7e3a9a3d66001e3b37cf636f0e

Lets check it out.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :filefind
    UnrealTournament.exe

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

One question are you running this .exe file as an Administrator?

p.s.
I searched google for "UnrealTournament.exe and windows 7"
I found this page.

No explanation as to why this is needed. You may be able to find some information in their forum.

I think you misunderstand. Unreal Tournament itself has nothing to do with the infection. It's a video game. I simply run it in order to make rundll32 appear. I can run any other game for the same results, therefore unreal tournament is irrelevant.

If you restart your computer and run any other games is rundll32.exe running?

If you close the game is rundll32.exe release (not running).

Yes but only when I am not connected to the internet.

When I am connected to the internet and I run any program or game, everything works perfectly, and rundll32 works normally using minimal resources, and it closes when I close the game.

However when I am NOT connected to the internet, and I run any game, then I close the game, rundll32 is NOT RELEASED. It remains in the process list, using up alot of CPU.

Again, it only happens when I disconnect my internet.
