Described my issue in the original thread here for reference

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic458687.html

I was able to find the specific user profile in question and access it via some recovery software but all the files I'm after are showing up as deleted, when recovered they seem all filled with gibberish and corrupted somehow.

I had someone at mwb forum help me to a certain degree, cleaned up a bunch of stuff via docweb, but he was unable to help me get my user/files back that I need, so here I am, thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/459517 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Let's see if we could get it recovered.

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Oh God, the same thing happened again to my remade vps desktop...how does this dubrute crap keep getting past my real time malwarebytes and mse running?!

I dont know how to continue this thread now since I have the same problem just screwed me up again.

A lot of my folders/files are 'gone' like last time...tried unhide.exe and did nothing like last time, so I followed the instructs to manually look for those temp folders. Nothing came up when searching for "smtmp" in the search box, though perhaps it just cant read it as I see various folders like the application data and some others locked now and I cannot access them again.

I did follow the C:\Users\Public\Desktop path to look for the 4th temp folder and it seemed to let me access that, i see whats left of the desktop along with a freaking 'dubrute folder' . i had run doc web earlier and it found the dubrute and i thought it had cleaned it, but i still see this folder with all this crap in it

I am sorry to muck up this thread, but I am not sure how to proceed from here since this happened again midthread.

Thanks for any advice

Have you tried running ComboFix? If retrieving your data is the main priority, we may be able to get it back through Linux distro.

Have you tried running ComboFix? If retrieving your data is the main priority, we may be able to get it back through Linux distro.

When reading about combofix it says it clears temp files/recycle bin etc , so I am afraid it will delete the files wherever this virus moved them too?

I have one folder on my desktop that is a priority that was butchered, a lot of the stuff is still there, but there is one part of the folder in particular that I have a dozen or so text files that I need back. For some reason it looked like it nuked my text files but left a lot of the other stuff alone. I think I caught it and halted it before it got to the rest of it like last time.

What is this linux distro and can it help me grab those handful of text files from within that desktop folder?

$50 donation to whoever can help me get back these important files. I had a more frequent backup schedule setup after my last runin with this same virus issue (never did get my files recovered from that one!) but had not enabled auto backup yet with cloud or dropbox yet and I am kicking myself. Cant believe it hit me again this soon.

Thanks

Linux is a open source operating system and what we are going to do is to get them loaded and access your files without having the infection active. In other words, we will be running it outside of Windows environment and hopefully you will be able to get back your folder and perform a reformat and reinstall on it.

To do this, you will need

1. Blank CD-R to burn the .iso
2. Thumb drive or external hard drive to save your folder

Following these steps very carefully

1. Download Linux Ubuntu from here. Leave the 32bit as it is and hit start download.
2. Insert the blank CD-R into your optical drive
3. Right-click on an ISO image and choose 'Open with > Windows Disc Image Burner'.
4. Select a disc burner (drive) and choose 'Burn'. If you check 'Verify disc after burning', it will confirm that the ISO image has been burned correctly.

Now that you have ubuntu burned into the CD-R disc, the next step will be a little bit complicated. Keep the CD-R inside the optical drive.

To ensure that you have burned it correctly, refer to this link. This link also tells you how to set your boot priority so that your machine will boot from the CD instead of HDD.

You should be able to get into Ubuntu menu and see "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" in the screen if done correctly.

Select that and see if you can see your files.

Let me know if these instructions aren't clear enough.
