Hello, I have a laptop with Vista installed and recently noticed MSE was not functioning, tried to update it and no joy. Then the laptop started giving the message "Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute" I cannot keep it on long enough to do anything. I really needs some help as this laptop has a lot of pictures and data on it. Thank you!

Now please enter System Recovery Options then select Command Prompt

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt) please post it to your reply.

Now restart, let it boot normally and tell me how it went.

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Windows booted normally, MSE advised that two potential threats were detected and will clean them, at the same time the error box popped up that Windows has encountered a critical error and will shut down in one minute. The laptop restarted to user screen, and will continue to reboot every minute from there too. Attached is the fixlog:

we need to use FRST to replace a file, let's find a replacement first

please do the following:

  • boot into System Recovery Options again and run FRST.

Type the following in the edit box after "Search:" so it looks like this:

    Search: services.exe

Click Search button and post the log it makes to your reply.

Combofix extracted and then gave me a you cannot rename combofix (there was a 1 in the name of the program), it looks like the one is now gone even though I did not take it out. Windows update tried to perform an update and reboot the computer but I postponed it. Is Combofix still running or do I need to do it again?

you should see a small blue DOS box if it is running, plus in task manager you should see PEV.exe, CFxxx.cfexe processes running

if you don't see anything similar, then start it again

okay, I am not sure if combofix finished and rebooted the laptop or if the MS updates did it. Now I am at a screen that reads Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer. Waiting to see if a log was created by combofix. The blue dosbox is still there and it reads preparing log report, do not run any programs unitl Combofix has finished.
