after a crash vista now displays wired network icon on the wireless connection.

it works like it should. i can enter status page. if i hover over it, it shows the signal strength.
when the computer starts it blinks between the wireless signal bars and back to the wired network icon, and it stops on the wired one.

i have tried updating wireless drivers. no difference
i have tried disabling other network cards. no difference
i have tried a usb wireless network card. no difference
i have tried resetting the icon cache by removing iconcache.db. no difference
i have tried disabling the network icon in the system tray, then re-enabling. no difference
i have run sfc /scannow. it shows some fails which it cannot repair. these are related to settings.ini in the sidebar. i have tried deleting this file but it still shows up in scans.

i am running out of options. does anybody have any suggestions for what i can try?

thanks in advance!

Hi toofarnorth,

vista now displays wired network icon on the wireless connection.

Hm...that is odd.

Have you tried a System Restore to a time before this occurred?

and it stops on the wired one.

By running on wired will disable the wireless connection which is normal.

i have run it back 2 months on system restore and it didnt change anything.

i was not using the wired at the same time as the wireless. i even disabled the wired connection in network and sharing.

i ended up reformatting it and then it worked fine afterwards. must have been something in windows that screwed things up..

thanks for helping out :)

In Vista you can customize the icons in the systray. Not sure if that is what happened or not.

Either way, glad you got it sorted. Thanks for letting us know. :thumbup2:
