Hello all,
Probably an easy question, but trying to resolve this issue:
Just purchased and connected a NetGear N600 wireless router to my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I have cable internet coming in through a cisco modem connecting to the router. The wireless connection is running fine. However, at times I'd like to have a wired connection by bypassing the router through disabing the wireless adapter via the switch on the front of the laptop and connecting the pc via ethernet right to the modem (as was the configuration prior to getting the wireless router). I've tried the several times, but now when I try to connect directly from PC to modem, I get no internet access...no IP when I run ipconfig. Any help out there????

Local Area Connection (Hardware not present)

Did you check your device manager if the Realtek NIC is present? Did you check if your wireless router have available LAN ports?

Yep, both the Realtek RTL8102E Family PCI-E NIC and RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n NIC are listed under Network adapters in the Device Manager and are enabled.

The wireless connection works great when ethernet is connected only from modem to router, and even with the addition of the PC connected to the router via ethernet. However, when the connection is from modem directly to PC without the router (and the wireless adapter turned off) as was my configuration before I bought the wireless router, I have no network access anymore.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas or if i'm not using useful terminology...or explaining things effectively! Thanks!

What happens if you disable the wireless on your laptop and connect it to the router using a wired connection?

Example:

Modem----->Router----->Laptop (wireless off, connected via ethernet)

After connecting directly to the modem you need to refresh your IP address. Disable the wireless, and Connect the lan cable to the modem and laptop. Next reboot the modem (unplug it for 30 seconds hen plug t back in) wait for the link and online lights to light. Next go to the command prompt (hold down the windows key and press the "R" key. Then type cmd and press enter) at the command prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. Wait for the command prompt to return the type ipconfig /renew and allow the modem to assign you an IP address. Some errors are normal specifically ones related to adapters that are not connected. See if that works.

What modem/ISP provider are you using? Did you try checking for the manual online for certain changes when running on modem alone and router as extension? I was thinking on why you should need to direct connecting to modem by LAN instead of using the router's LAN port if available...
