Last night I ran chkdsk/f c: and received hundreds of disk errors most of which looked like this:

Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, OEStandard Property) from file record segment xxxxxx
Deleted corrupt attribute list entry with type code 128 in file xxxxx

All this was followed by error recoveries many from orphaned files and other types of recoveries.
Lastly it said "File verification complete"

It was followed by a normal Windows 7 startup. Everything seems ok now but is this the beginning of the end for this disk?

First - Do not panic -
Next run sfc /scannow from Command Prompt window - You do not need disks for this and it may find / repair some problems.

This will only take about 15 mins, and is simple to do -

Post back when it is finished -

Please post the chkdsk log.

A log of the disk check is recorded only if the scheduled re-start is used, and only for drives on the same HDD as the Operating System.
To open Event Viewer and view the log:
  • Go to Start > and type eventvwr and press the <ENTER> key.
The Event Viewer window will open.
  • In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application.
  • In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically.
  • Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check.
  • Click on that Wininit entry to select it.
  • On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text.
  • Paste the log text into your next reply.

C:\windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log is 1,088 kb. Too large to post. This is the end of the file.

Output of Event Viewer to follow.

Ouch! That's some serious disk file system corruption you have going on there!
  • I have not come across anything quite like that before.
  • Also, it appears that a significant part of the chkdsk log is missing!***
  • I am not inclined to suggest anything further based on that: I would need to know a lot more about the situation before blundering blindly on.

Yes, it looks like it's missing the tail end. I will try to add it later today.

what kind of hard drive do you have. I would run a manufacture diagnostic hard drive test but it looks like a NTFS problem

Have you defrag yet? or run chkdsk C: /r r is for recovery of bad sectors.

Sorry, but I must advise strongly against doing either of those things under the circumstances, at the risk of making the current situation far worse than it is already.

Good: I'll await that. :thumbup2:

You wrote: "What else would you like to know?"
  • FIRSTLY, do you have a complete backup safely stored elsewhere of any personal files of importance on that hard drive?
  • Do you have a complete system image saved safely elsewhere that you can use to restore the current Windows system to a new HDD?
  • Do you have the means to re-install the Windows operating system in the event that you need to replace the HDD?

Test the hard drive.

It is best to use the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility, but Seagate's tool will work OK on most brands. The diagnostic tool is run from a bootable CD (Windows does not need to be working. The first two steps are done on a working computer, while the third step is to boot the ailing computer with the CD that you create in the first two steps.)

:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

When you can, include the make and model number of the problematic hard drive. If you do choose to use SeaTools, you will see the model number (and maybe the make) when SeaTools first detects the hard drive.

I checked Event Viewer (wininit). It seems the file is too large. The pasted output is the same as before.

I did defrag the disk with no problems before I got the warning not to do it.

The answer to your 3 questions above are YES, YES, YES. I keep numerous backups on external disks (operating system including boot and default profile).

The remainder of your advice will have to wait for another day or two.

Thanks

Hi,

I downloaded the Seatools .iso file and burned a CD with the latest version of Imgburn. The CD booted fine but didn't run. It got "Invalid Opcode" errors.

... "Invalid Opcode" errors.

That's the second time recently that I have come across that "Invalid Opcode" error: If I can find the other instance I will edit this post and include the link to that topic.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think we settled on attempting the SeaTools hard drive tests using a bootable UBCD flashdrive (instead of a CD) though I am not convinced you would need to use a USB device and I would suggest that you try it first with UBCD on a CD in the optical drive.

Here's that topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic459918.html
  • Note: It has been split from another similar topic.
