Hi, this is my first time here so may appear a bit dense - my brain has also been fried by my b#*!y computer!

I have got Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit

On Friday I updated Rapport and Java as well as some windows high priority updates. My computer stared to act up - running slowly, freezing etc. I ran Malwarebytes and Avast scans which did not pick anything up.
Then it would not open various programmes, I had to go into control panel amnd repair various installations. When I went to run Malwarebytes again it did not recognise that I had any previous updates on there. When I opened Avast it said that the programme was out of date (which it hadn't been earlier). The system the froze so I rebooted it. On start up it started the 'start up repair' process but stated it could not repair the machine. When I restarted again it took a looooong time to boot up. Once it had there was an error message on my desktop that said

"Cannot load file or assembly 'sortkey.nlp' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified"

I look at some forums and thee was mentions that an error message like this could be a virus. I ran some of the suggested software (Stinger, Rkill, Kaspersky security scan) which yielded nothing. I then did a system restore to before I allowed the updates and the error message dissappeared and I thought that was the end of the problems.

Then the computer started to, once again, not open some programmes. Avast still stated that it was out of date. I spoke to a tech support guy from the place I got the machine and he advised me to run core temp and clean out the fans in my machine just in case it was an over-heating problem. I did this but it did not seem to make any difference.

After a couple of days of the same behaviour I tried a whole range of other malware scans, just in case I had missed anything. Whilst the Windows Malware Removal Tool was running I left the room for a while. When I came back in there was a blue screen with the error message

"Coooo135 The programme cannot start because %hs is missing"

I rebooted the machine and the Start up repair process started again. This time, though, it did not register that I had an operating system on the machine at all. In fact it could not find my hard drive and only the x drive was present. I shut down the machine and took my frustrations out by beating the S*!t out of a cushion. An hour later I turned the machine back on and, hey presto, the hard drive was back and it started fully again, although it took a very long time to do so.

I had a look at some forums and discovered that the error "Coooo135" could result from malware changing a registry entry. So I checked but the registry had not been changed. I then ran TDSS Killer, Hitman Pro and Sophos viral removal tool. Sophos took a log time to scan, but it stated that it had discovered a trojan "Mal/Cracker-B" which it then removed.

This morning I turned the machine on and set it to a full scan with Avast and left it to it. It found two PUP's - Which it stated were both Win32:InstallCore-AM. The file names were $RGYAVJE.exe and $ROYD6E7.exe. The machine then froze again, and when re-booted could no longer find the hard drive or OS.

I spoke to another tech guy who advised me to try swapping over the hard drive sata cable just in case it was faulty. I did that and it started again properly. I was running some scans, and started my post on here, when the machine froze again and the desktop disappeared. I pressed CTRL ALT DEL and got the message

"Failure to display security and shut down options.
The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed"

I rebooted into safe mode, and now here I am. Please help me!

Sorry for the mammoth post, I just wanted to try to give you as much detail as possible.

Thanks,

Rachel

I recently found the exact same PUP when I did a boot scan with Avast. I moved the infected files to the quarantine chest and haven't had a problem.

I suggest you try setting Avast to run a boot scan while you are in Safe mode. Here's how:
  • Open the Avast user interface; under the SCAN COMPUTER tab select Boot-time Scan.
  • Click on Settings in blue under the Schedule Now button. At the bottom of the parameters box that opens, there's a drop down menu below the words "When a threat is found..." -- select the "Move to Chest" option, then click OK.
  • Click on the Schedule Now button. It will then say "scheduled to run on next system restart."
  • Then click on the blue words "Restart computer."

My computer still has three days warranty (!) so the company I got it from has agreed to supply me with a new hard drive. I just need to be 100% it isn't due to malware before I format the drive and send it to them.

Thanks for your help,

Rachel
