Hi all,

As of late, one of my computers (Windows 7, 64-bit) has been randomly freezing up. When this happens, I hear a crackle from my speakers, and my USB mouse and keyboard get disconnected (their lights get turned off, so I'm assuming that's the case), and the screen just freezes so it isn't just the mouse/keyboard getting disconnected. This happens on different times - two shortly after startup, one while on a page that uses Flash (I use Chrome, if that's helpful), and one while using a format converter.

Going through the event logs, the only event that seems to be related to this is one saying that the computer had been improperly turned off at the time this happened. No other errors that could've caused this could be found. I have a suspicion that it may be an issue with the GPU, since I recently saw a notification saying that my video card's driver recovered from an error, and Photoshop has been crashing as of late due to GPU-related problems.

Anyways, I would really appreciate it if the problem can be pinpointed, and what steps I should take to fix it. Thank you so much! :)

Seems to be happening more frequently now, and I've added another suspect: the wireless adaptor I'm using. :( The computer froze again after booting up and clicking on the "Network" link in Explorer. Also, the adaptor itself seemed to be disabled at bootup since the computer said that no connections were available - I had to unplug and reconnect the adaptor before connecting to the network.

Currently in safe mode. No errors again other than the unexpected shutdown one. No dumps created either. :(

Hi Schrod,

Do you know how to do a restore? Restart computer ,when you would do the safe mode thing, push F4, and hold it down and it should take you to the restore page, where you can do a partial to complete restore, sounds like you might need complete restore which wipes out your memory ,unless it's backed up.
Jim
PS, hopefully, someone, a bit smarter than me will come along and give you more specific advice, best to you!!

Hey Jim,

I doubt that system restore will be helpful to me in this case, since I don't remember installing anything that could've caused this. This pretty much came out of the blue.

Hey Artrooks. I haven't been in Safe Mode enough to determine if the freezes still happen. Here's the snapshot: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/jd4KDkSLr2JDk8hzxu32e6u

I have another possible cause for this: overheating. It seems that the freeze doesn't happen when I turn on the computer after not using it for a while, but once it freezes and I restart it, it's more likely to freeze. Does overheating usually cause the system to make an error report?

Thank you so much! :)

Taken from your Speccy output
CPU
Intel Xeon 5150 @ 2.66GHz: 45 °C
Motherboard
Tyan Computer Corporation D1808 (CPU0): 29 °C
Graphics
256MB Quadro FX 3500 (nVidia): 56 °C
In general I think that overheating can be ruled out with these results -

Antivirus: Disabled - Do you normally run an Antivirus program ??

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Please Copy / Paste the results back here -
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

That's odd. I use Avira AntiVir Free for my antivirus (and it's on), so I'm not exactly sure why it's saying it's disabled.

Anyways, here is the log:

Hi,

I have a suspicion that it may be an issue with the GPU

Check the nVidia website to see if there is a newer driver for your Quadro FX 3500 graphics card. It looks like your current version is NVIDIA Graphics Driver 296.70.

Regards,
Brooks

Will do. Hopefully my computer won't kill itself in the meantime. :P

Thank you so much! :D

Sigh...

After more than a day of experiencing no freezes, my computer decided to freeze again today. This was after not using the computer for nearly a day, and happened just a few minutes after I turned on the computer (so it can't be overheating issues). I had three Chrome windows open with a couple tabs in each, and Avira updated itself (since the popup window was open) when the crash happened. After a hard reboot, the computer froze again shortly after getting into the desktop. After another hard reboot, the computer froze during boot (when it was listing hard drives). It was a different "type" of freeze though -- the blinking "_" was still showing, but the text animation that usually showed stopped (sorry for the lack of proper terms).

I'm pretty much stumped. What I suspect is an issue with the wireless adaptor, a hardware problem with the video card, or even hard drive failure. Any help?

Just a couple of updates: I turned my computer on with the wireless adapter unplugged, and it rebooted by itself a few minutes later. Going into safe mode, it gave me the same error in the event viewer (unexpected shutdown). Returning to normal boot, the computer froze at the logon screen. A scan using Malwarebytes revealed nothing, and the error doesn't happen in Safe Mode (yet).

Please help. :(

This error pops up on a regular basis
Error: (06/14/2012 10:38:01 PM) (Source: Application Hang) (User: )
Description: The program pythonw.exe version 0.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.

It may pay just to uninstall this and see if the situation is improved at all -

Python 2.7.3 (Version: 2.7.3150)

Hi,

The hard drive and computer memory are easy to test.

1) Test the hard drive (Seagate) (it may be best to create the bootable material on a different computer)
  • Download the Seatools for DOS version by clicking the "Downloads" tab, selecting operating system (Windows 7), then "Download - accept license agreement. Burn the "SeaToolsDOS223ALL.Iso" image to a CD so it is bootable.
  • Don't know how or can't burn an "Iso" image?
  • Download ImgBurn from here.
  • Install the software then start ImgBurn.
  • Select "Write Image file to disk" then under "Source" click on the "folder icon" Posted Image to the right and select the "iso" file location.
  • Click on this icon to "Start." Posted Image
[/list]
  • Restart your computer with the Diagnostic Disk. (For how to set CDROM drive to boot first, go here)
  • Run the Short test first and then the Long test.
  • If given the option to repair the drive, allow it but ONLY if you have backed up all important data on the drive.
  • Any reported errors in either test should make you suspect a failing hard drive.
2) Test computer memory (how to)
  • Run at least 7 full passes for minimal confidence, 12-24 hours for moderate to maximum confidence.

A failing power supply (PSU) can cause freezing; however, it's difficult to test when the problem is intermittent. Swapping in a known good PSU, while not always possible, is a good way to rule out the PSU as a cause.

Regards,
Brooks

<snip>

I have an explanation for that. Earlier this month, I was building a program using the Python language. The program would crash as I tested it, hence the multiple errors. Python wasn't running in the background when the error occured, so I doubt that would be the culprit.

<snip>

I've recently uninstalled a program (Philips Songbird) that seems to conflict with the computer every time I use it. So far, I haven't experienced any freezes. I will, however, run the tests you mentioned to make sure that the computer is in its proper state.

Thank you so much! :) I'll get back to you.

Tried running Seatools, but it couldn't find my hard drives (probably because they were SATA). It crashed after a divide by zero error, and seemed to have uninstalled some important things. I got to Windows though, and it reinstalled everything after logging in.

Will try Memtest tonight, I guess.
