Hi,

I have suspection of virus / rootkit infection, as my computer slowing down seriusly and my atempts to download many programs from bleepingcomputer.com such as combofix or DDS was blocked - files started to downlad and then stopped definitely never downlad more than 1% (there is no porblem with other download). About month ago I noticed google redirection to an unknown website (which adres I don't remember) and use many antivir programs which helped and redirection stopped. From that time my computer slowed down and today I decided to use diagnostic tools as well as combofix, but was unable to download them due to specific download blocking. I was able to downlaod and use GMER, and was able to download older version of combofix from third part website (which was unable to update itself due to download problem) and use it (before I noticed order of not using it without supervision). I attached GMER logs (I cannot attache DDS due to mentioned download problem) and CF log which was executed befor I have red caution of not use it by myself.

Any help would be very apreciated - there are many of my clients sensitive personal, bank, debt and law data on my computer so its importatnt for me (and them) to keep it secret and not allowed any hacker to obtain that data.

PS

All of HD partition is encrypted (due to sensitive character od stored data), I also use avira and Zone Alarm as standard.

Waiting for Your help:)

Hello,

thank You very much for your help and reopening of this topic.

I've downloaded recomended tools na done scans as I'd been written without any visible truble.

Requested logs are attached to post for Your review.

I've noticed only one problem during scanning with aswMBR which shown message: Service sptd C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\sptd.sys **LOCKED** 32

As I've mentioned in my first message the main problem is serious slown down of my notebook, which followed the infection of unknown kind of google redirect rootkit (or something else that redirected google to unknown site). The mentioned rootkit was probably partly destroyed by my attempt to cure notebook - as redirection stopped, leaving slow computer without any other visible symptoms.

The important matter is that the whole drive is encrypted by TrueCrypt, so if any kind of mbr rootkit / virus cause the infection it could be risky to use mbr utilities restoring standard mbr (of course i don't know wheater infection is caused by mbr rootkit but in case I prefere to mention present of TrueCrypt encryption).

Thank You for Your help.

00:25:35.451 Service sptd C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\sptd.sys **LOCKED** 32

There is nothing to worry about. The TDSSKiller log would have seen if the driver was not the default.
It may be because you have some Emulator Software installed.
===

On concern I have is that all your files in the drivers section of the ComboFix log is marked with an [x]

R2 SkypeUpdate;Skype Updater;c:\program files\Skype\Updater\Updater.exe [x]

This to me indicates that the file is not present.
This may be because your HD is encrypted, I'm note sure.

Can you check to see if some of the files are present.

===

Lets check some setting on you download problems.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hello,

thank You very much for your instruction.

I've checked indicated files form drive section of ComboFix log marked with [x] and found that some are indeed missing.
The list of missing files below:

R3 massfilter;ZTE Mass Storage Filter Driver;c:\windows\system32\drivers\massfilter.sys [x]
R3 MEMSWEEP2;MEMSWEEP2;c:\windows\system32\17D7.tmp [x]
R3 SDTHelper;Helper driver for SDT-Tool;c:\users\Epson\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EX22.472\sdthlpr.sys [x]

S0 sptd;sptd;c:\windows\\SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\sptd.sys [x] - this one is for me suspicious as it was pointed in aswMBR log as locked and the patch is strange - ther is not \\SystemRoot directory in c:\windows (but i'm not the windows specialist so of corse I can misunderstand the problem and don't understand this patch being). The file is present in patch c:\windows\System32\Drivers\sptd.sys - taking into consideration windows explorer indication.

The rest of marked files are in place.

I've also scanned computer using recommended Farbar Service Scanner. Generated by the program log is attached to this post.

Once again thak You for your help.

Yes it's strange but if you do not get an error message then it's ok.

I think that if you run this tool the entry in the aswMBR log will be removed.

Disable the CD emulators....

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

To reestablish it enable the CD Emulator.

HOW TO: Enable the CD Emulators... < restore only when we are finished.

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.
===

This will remove the registry items related to the missing drivers.
If you are still using the ZTE Mass Storage remove massfilter from the text in the Coded box.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

Driver::
massfilter
MEMSWEEP2
SDTHelper

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.
===

This is a long shot. Please disable Zone Alarm and let me know what problem persists.

Helo,

Thank You for response. I've done as You recommended me. I have not found any suspicious log information - but I'm not expert. I still have some problem with computer slowing down, but I don't know wheater it's fault of any infection, windows damages caused in previous - mentioned - infection, or it's just the fault of computer hardware.

I send recomenden log in attachement.

if you don't see any virus/rootkit infection problem I'm much more calm, as I can live with slowing down computer, but cannot afford risk of my customers information leaks.

Thank You very much for Your help.

Lets check it out.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit

Please download the Sophos Anti-Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

You will need to enter your name, e-mail address and location in order to access the download page.

  • Once you have downloaded the file, double click the sarsfx icon
  • Review the licence agreement and click on the Accept button
  • The scanner will prompt you to extract the files to C:\SOPHTEMP - DO NOT change this location, simply click the Install button
  • Once the files have been extracted; using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\SOPHTEMP and double click on the blue shield icon called sargui
  • Ensure that there are checkmarks next to Running processes, Windows registry and Local hard drives, then click Start scan
  • Allow the program to scan your computer - please be patient as it may take some time
  • Once the scan has completed a window will pop-up with the results of the scan - click OK to this
  • In the main window, you will see each of the entries found by the scan (if any)
    • If the scanner generated any warning messages, please click on each warning and copy and paste the text of it into this thread for me to review
    • Once you have posted any warning messages here, you can close the scanner and wait for me to get back to you
  • If you have not had any warnings, any entries which can be cleaned up by the scanner will have a box with a green checkmark in it next to the entry
  • To clean up these entries click on the Clean up checked items button
  • If you accidentally check a file NOT recommended for clean up, you will get a warning message and if necessary can re-select the entries you want to clean up
  • Once you have cleaned the selected files, you will be prompted to re-boot your computer - please do so
  • How your computer is running now

Hello,

Thank You for your response. It is long shoot indeed:)

I tried to do as You recomended but found some trouble, as I cannont download Sophos Anti-Rootkit Scanner from given link - under mentioned link the screen is blank. I've tried to find the program on the Sophos website but was unable due to lack of mentioned program download posibility (or my mistake). Under the mentioned program name I was able to download Sophos Virus Removal Tool only - I think that maybe it's new version of mentioned program but I'm not sure of that.
Due to lack of Sophos Anti-Rootkit Scanner download from producer website I've tried to find older version on my computer as I'd used it before, and as a result I've found Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5 version.

I was unable to put checkmarks on running process box - as the box was grey and uninteractive. The program found a few hidden files in strange localization - strange in this meaning means that most of the files are .pdf scan archive files from company scanners so they sould be common - ordinary files. The copy of warnings are given in attachement due to some coustomer names wchich are presented in files names.

After Sophos Anti-Rootkit Scanner had finished scan, I've used downloaded from porducer web site Sophos Virus Removal Tool, wchih was scanning my notebook form many houres. As result it noticed 4 threads but has not generated any log. I was not able to noticed firmst thread as it was deleted to quick, the second thread wchich took that program about haf an houre was called Troj/JSRedir-DP, and the only one wchih is mentioned in "details" is
Mal/HckPk-A (in 698 items) - I think that it was in some backup from other computer and was not dangerous but of course I don't know that for sure. I still can't find the 4-th wchich wasn't reported at all.

Once again thank You form You help.

Hello,

after I've rebooted computer Sophos Virus Removal Tool finished removal proceduer and removed - according to its report - Troj/JSRedir-Dp thread.
I think that it could be the problem as removal proces of that trad was long and finished sucessfully after reboot - what colud give me a impresion that the virus/rootkit was operating in memory not allowing to remove itself befor reboot - but of course I can be wrong.

After this removal prces slowing down of my computer seems to stop - but it has been only a few minutes so I don't know if it is permanent effect.

One again thank You for help.

Sorry about the bad link. I changed my canned speech for future reference.

Just one last check.

Third party programs if not up to date can be an open door for an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
