Hello, one2855.
  • Download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click TDSSKiller.exe to run it.
  • Under "Objects to scan" ensure both "Services and Drivers" and "Boot Sectors" are checked.
  • Click Start scan and allow it to scan for Malicious objects.
  • If malicious objects are found, the default action will be Cure, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue.
  • If suspicious objects are detected, the default action will be Skip, ensure Skip is selected then click Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now and allow the computer to reboot.
  • A log will be created on your root (usually C:) drive. The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
    for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.1.2_20.04.2010_15.31.43_log.txt
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear.
  • Please post the contents of the logfile in your next reply

Also, please let me know if you have your windows installation DVD handy. We might need it to replace a file or two.

OK, since you have internet in Safe Mode, but not in NOrmal mode...a startup service or application is causing this issue. Follow the clean boot procedure to narrow in on the culprit. If a fully clean boot still creates issues, just re-enable everything and let me know. If it works fine, then follow the enabling/disabling to narrow down on the root cause. Then stop and let me know what startup or service is causing the issue.

OK, two more things.

  • Click Start button.
  • Type cmd in the search box and wait
  • Right mouse click on CMD under Programs and choose Run As Administrator. Click Allow or Yes at the popup to let it run as admin.
  • Type netsh winsock reset at the prompt and then press the Enter key.
  • Restart the computer.

Does internet work in Normal mode then? If not, disable AVast by right-clicking on the orange ball in your action center, select Avast! Shields Control and click Disable until system is restarted. Try to browse then? Does it work? Immediately reboot so they are re-enabled. If it works, we'll switch out your antivirus. If it doesn't work, we'll move on to the next possibility.

OK...when yhou type cmd in the Start menu search box, don't press Enter...just wait.
In a second or two, search results for cmd will pop up. Under Programs, right-click the cmd.exe item and select Run As Administrator. THen, at the popup, click Yes to allow it to run that way. We can't run the command from a normal command prompt, we need to run it from an 'elevated' (e.g. administrator) level.

Does that make sense?

We will uninstall. Follow steps 1-6 at this link:
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

After the reboot into normal mode (step 6) test the internet. Let me know if you have internet at that point.

Regardless, after that install one of the following antivirus programs:
Avira: http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
Avast: http://www.avast.com/index
MSE: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

If it doesn't work, we will have ruled out interference from your security suite.

Have you tried another browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Opera? Or just using Internet Explorer? If you have only used IE, please install one of those browsers and let me know if that works. THat will narrow down the issue to IE or systemic.

Nothing there...it looks good. Let's reset IP.

Follow these instructions to do that:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

And just to confirm, a completely clean boot in Normal mode = no internet; but booting in safe mode = internet works?
