Hello,

I've just format my Windows XP, and I want to use Microsoft Update, but I recive this error message: 0x80240036

I followed the steps exacly on the Microsoft Page, but my internet connection is ok and I don't know whitch other issue can cause this.

I do hope someone has a solution for this.

One possibility is that your XP Service packs are to out of date. I beleiev you need to be running at least service pack 2 to update now.

This page for Service Pack 1a
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19751

This Page for service pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28

This page for service pack 3
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

This should get you going

Good Luck
Roger

Sorry for the late response, but I want to thank you.

The notebook is running normal again.

Just let the topic sit dormant.

Quick question was it the Service packs that was the problem. I'm asking for future reference.

Hi,

I was trying to install WinXP SP2 in a VMware Player virtual machine, and had this same issue with windows update not working inside the virtual machine. Installing SP3 in the virtual machine worked to get windows update working again.

Thanks for the hint.
