Hi everyone. I'm new here, but this forum is the place I came to help a relative fix her laptop's freezing* issues. The computer is a couple years old, and it has never worked properly. It's a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 SP1. She insists on using AOL as her browser and mail app, and I can't get her to switch to something more stable or less resource-hogging. The computer freezes constantly, but naturally I suspect there's a deeper problem than just her use of AOL. I think it might be a registry issue, but I don't have enough knowledge of computer registries to fix it. That's just my hunch, though. I have run anti-virus and anti-malware programs (Avast and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) on it for the past year at least, and she has been virus and malware free for some time.

Recently, she received an error message from Windows Explorer. I can't tell you exactly what it said b/c she didn't write it down, but the short story is I ran the system file checker via the command prompt (sfc /scannow) and received a message saying that the Windows Resource Manager found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. I ran this in safe mode and after a normal boot-up. So here are my questions:

1) if I were to post a CBS log file from her system file checker on bleepingcomputer.com, is there someone who could help me interpret it?
2) should I post the CBS log file that I obtained from running Windows 7 in safe mode or under normal conditions?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

* freezing = system hangs (majority of the time), but sometimes the AOL software just freezes and you can still do other things

Hi A.J.T. -
Unless there was an access problem I would always run sfc /scannow from Normal mode with all files exposed -
Safe mode will not install all files, as it is only "basic diagnostic mode" and hides many items for Safe operation only -

Also run a chkdsk /r from an elevated command prompt > http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/
Or use > Computer > right click C:drive > Properties > Tools > select Error Checking > Check now > tick both boxes > Reboot -

Hi A.J.T,

Please read over this Microsoft KB article How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Post your sfcdetails.txt file and we will see what we can do. By the way do you have a Windows 7 install disk handy, might need in order to replace corrupted files.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I do. Had to search for it. She actually received two 64bit re-install disks from Dell, and they don't seem to be different by just looking at them. Not sure if that's the usual with Dell or if they are indeed different.

Please look very carefully at the disks, and make sure there are not numbers 1 and 2 somewhere on them. This is the usual practice -

Please download SystemLook from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
Link 1
•Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
•Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
:filefind
tcpmon.ini
•Click the Look button to start the scan.
•When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Please post this log in your next reply

Thank You -

Turns out it's two copies of the same Windows 7 re-installation disk. One is for the laptop we're working on and the other is for another computer she has.

Hi
I may have given you the 32bit link and not the 64bit link for Sys Look, as there are minor changes to the tool -
If you have a 64-bit system, please download the 64 bit version from here:
SystemLook (64-bit)
•Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

tcpmon.ini

She insists on using AOL as her browser << Please run / download this and use Internet Explorer 9 as the browser for now.
Also check for any Microsoft Updates -
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Download Screen317 Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
