I used Roxio so I could change a DVD-R into a makeshift flash drive. Adding and erasing things as I please.

The first time I put the disc back into my laptop it played as normal and all the files showed up so I put it away until needed again. Yesterday I insert the disc and it's blank!

Now it's only pictures from a vacation and some other semi-important documents but I really do want these files back. Have they vanished forever or are they still on there somewhere, and if they are how do I find them?

Hi,
See if there is a option to finalize the disk in the same part of the Roxio software you used.
I'm not sure what OS or Roxio version you are using, However that feature as always unreliable in the older versions in my opinion.

As inexpensive as Quality DVD blanks are I don't worry about filling them. However to save shelf space I usually just use a 32Gb flash drive that I paid Approx $20 for to hold the files as a backup incase the hard drive dies. When I have enough to fill the DVD blank, then I burn it two times with verification using Imgburn and test. Them after a reboot and test I then erase the files off of the flash drive.

I get this message when I try to finalise it.

Please insert an appendable data disc that is CD media or DVD write-once media.

Hi,
You could try this software.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ISOBuster

ISOBuster is the Ultimate CD/DVD/Blu-ray data recovery tool. Extract data from your unreadable CDR/Ws/DVDR/BD/Ws and BD/CD/DVD image formats(.iso, .bin/cue, .nrg...). It can also extract mpg video files from VCD and SVCD. ISOBuster is part freeware and shareware. Register/Donate $30 to get all functions

Maybe some can recommend something else too. I would not spend the $30. I would try the free functions.
I have used it in the past to recover video and it worked for that.

Good Luck
Roger
