I got this in an IM from a friend the other day:
should i put these pictures of us on myspace or facebook?

silly me clicked the link, because I thought my friend really did have pictures of us.. well it started to download something, which i thought was weird because i use photobucket, and i know they dont download anything.. anyways, i didnt think anything of it.. that was 2 or 3 days ago, and then last night (tues nite) something took over my AIM.. it started sending IMs, but i didnt see what the message was.. for some reason I was getting ims back of my friend's away messages.
I had no idea what was going on, until I got a txt sent to my cell phone (on AIM you can add cell phone numbers, and I put mine on my buddy list) with the message I posted above.

I ran adaware, spybot search and destroy, house call and PC-cillan antivirus (thats the program I use), and no viruses were found, but a whole bunch of other stuff was found and deleted.. not sure if it was adaware, malware or anyother type of ware.

My question is.. how do I know if my system really is clean, or if its just a virus that isnt known by my program.
----
I scanned all the files with different programs and some programs told me the computer is clean, some told me its infected.. for the most part the files have been cleaned, but BitDefender told me there were files that couldn't be cleaned. Please help me.. I have no idea what's going on

Hi and welcome to Bleeping.

There's no sign of any AIM worms or viruses but you do have a rather horrible adware program installed.

Disconnect from the net and go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall New.Net Domains.

Then run an online scan at Panda ActiveScan
  • Once on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button and then the Check Now button on the nex screen.
  • Enter your details in the required fields.
  • Then click the big Scan Now button.
  • Allow the Active X component to install and download the necessary files. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
  • Upon scan completion, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh HijackThis log and the Panda results in your next reply please.

Ok, it's not always present so download LSP-Fix.zip and WinsockFix to your desktop.

Then follow Procedure 4 of this link to remove New.Net.

If you have trouble reconnecting to the net after uninstalling New.Net, run LSPFix. Check the 'I know what I'm doing' button, hit 'Finish' and reboot the machine. Do NOT run LSP-Fix though unless your connection is broken. If you still have problems, run WinsockFix.

Then proceed with the Panda scan.

Just double-click the file to run it then.

Ensure ALL OTHER browser windows (inc. this one) and programs are closed first.

Nothing too serious there.

Use Windows Explorer to locate & delete everything inside these folders (leaving the folders intact):

C:\Documents and Settings\Princess Melanie\Cookies\
C:\Documents and Settings\Julian Kotch\Cookies\

You can delete this file as well:

C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_22.exe

Then delete all temp & temporary internet files:

Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr in the run box.

Checkmark ONLY Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin.

Click OK to start the cleanup and wait for it to finish

Then click Start > Run, and type %temp% and press OK

Click Edit > Select All > Edit > Delete.

You also need to update your Sun Java to the latest version.

Go to http://www.java.com/en/ and download the latest version.

Before installing the latest version, go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the old J2SE Runtime Environment.

Then install the latest version..

I went ahead and deleted all the cookies, I'm about to delete all the Temp Files.. but one thing I'm not so sure I should delete is: C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_22.exe
I deleted that one time and it made me lose my internet connection.

The laptop is running ok, sometimes faster than other times.. I keep losing the wireless connection, but I dont know if that's because the actual connection keeps crapping out or because there's an issue with my wireless

That's why I had you download LSP-fix and Winsock fix a few posts ago.

New.net is notorious for breaking one's internet connection if removed incorrectly and I dare say Net.net is responsible for the trouble you've had with your wireless connection.

Make sure you copy the instructions I posted above before deleting the file in question. If you have connectivity problems afterwards, run LSP-fix to repair your connection.

Ok I deleted the file you told me to, and so far it seems like I still have my internet connection.

Again, thank you so much for your help!!

Everything appears to be in order so I guess we can wrap things up for the time being.

Let me know if the problems return.

Now that you're clean again, please follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe and secure in the future.

Re-enable Your Protection

If asked to reveal your hidden system files and folders during the course of the fix, please rehide those now by reversing the steps here.

Please also re-enable the real-time protection for any anti-spyware programs I asked you to disable before proceeding with the fix.

Disable and Re-enable System Restore to Flush Infected Restore Points

If you are using Windows ME or XP, you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in your restore points.

You can find instructions on how to disable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

Re-enable System Restore with instructions from the tutorial above and create a new Restore point.

Block Access to Untrustworthy Sites

You can prevent your computer from visiting a myriad of untrustworthy sites and ad-servers by installing a customised hosts file. One of the best available is the MVPS Hosts File. Simply follow the instructions to install the file in the correct location. This will not only make surfing safer but will improve website load times and block popups from many of the large ad-servers.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Safe Surfing

I spoke too soon.. Lost internet connection.. and I'm on another computer in my house so its obviously just my laptop.. GR
I'm going to go run LSPFix and then Winsoc if I need it

I ran both of those neither worked. So I restored the NDNUnistall file, and now I have my internet back.. but of course that's the worst case scenario right now

Sorry I missed you. Not quite sure why I didn't get a notification of your post on the 11th.

Anyway, can you post a fresh HijackThis log please and answer the following questions for me.

1. How many user accounts are on this machine?

2. Think back to when you used LSP-Fix and WinsockFix. Is there a chance you were connected to the net when you ran these programs?

They must be used offline.

I've never known these programs to fail restoring a connection after New.net destroyed it.
