Hello BC community. Here is my problem. I just got a usb wifi turbotenna. It uses Ralink software. Initially I set it up and it worked great. I would click on it and the site survey would come up and there would be many networks etc. Just for the hay of it, after a few days, I uninstalled the software and just plugged in the usb antenna(turbotenna) and Windows found the drivers and it worked fine through Windows own site survey.
The next day I downloaded the Ralink software again, plugged in the turbotenna and opted to "use zero configuration as configuration utility".
I then saw that Ralink's site survey would not come up. No surprise. Now that I WANT Ralink's site survey back as I'm sure I don't want to use Windows now, I can't. I tried another complete uninstall/reinstall. Windows will not relinquish it's primary control over the wifi network.
Ralink driver updates/repairs don't help. Status of Ralink's link Info say "NIC or driver not ready".
All that means is that Windows is blocking Ralink from taking primary control as it did several days ago. How do I get Windows Zero Config to stand down? BTW, I have a Windows 7 Ultimate machine.

Click Start, type services.msc in the Search Box, scroll down the list until you find Wireless Zero Configuration, double click it, click stop, then set the startup type to disabled. You should now be able to use your Ralink software (you may have to check a box within the software to tell it to control the wireless)

I have Windows 7. Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't exist in services. I did however try disabling WLAN auto in services. It didn't work.
Can a BC expert suggest a fix?

Yeah, WLAN Auto Config (said Wireless Zero out of habit). Turn the WLAN Auto Config service back on. If you don't want WLAN Auto Config to control it, open up a command prompt window as an administrator (right click the command prompt shortcut and select "run as administrator") and type the following command:

netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface=<inf-name>

inf-name is the name of the wireless interface when you see open network connections, typically it's Wireless Network Connection

I think the problem here is an out of range networks as looking on your first post would tell many networks and not home network... Can you try disabling the NIC card and try connecting?

Hi Jhayz. I have been able to connect to the network. Its not out of range. I do have the manual on my desktop, but thank you for providing a link.
This shows me that you are familiar with this antenna. Now then..when you say disable the NIC card, do you mean the adapter that is Wireless network connection? The one I can easily go to by clicking on windows site survey"s "change adapter settings".

I must tell you an additional tidbit. When I first installed Ralink software it worked perfectly. Every time I booted up the pc, the Ralink icon would show up alongside all the other icons(avast, comodo, battery, etc. It now does not show up. I have to manually start it. Whats more, now the Ralink options that used to come up when right clicked, just arent there anymore. Before there were 5 options, now there are only 2. Whenever I connect to a network, Ralink reads, "Ralink Wireless LAN card Disconnected". Even when connected. It wasn't like that before. Windows is totally blocking Ralink's ability to have any control at all.
This trouble began when I uninstalled the Ralink software and plugged in the Turbotenna to my pc. Windows LOADED ITS OWN DRIVERS and now seems to think that it should control things no matter what. I have uninstalled/reinstalled twice and it won't allow Ralink software to be primary as it did last week.
I will uninstall again, disable the NIC and try the commands the other poster suggested. I guess that might work. I hope so.
