My father has a Windows XP pro laptop. When he started experiencing many problems he wanted me to look into it. No software in this computer was updated(including Windows and antivirus softwares).

That time I had no knowledge of bleepingcomputer, so I started to repair it alone. I updated windows from sp2 to sp3 and applied some of those windows updates(not sure which all to apply). I used many antivirus and antimalware softwares searching for a solution. They are Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Microsoft Safety Scanner, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 2011, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & SUPERAntiSpyware. I was infected with trojan.win32.autorun.hm, trojan.win32.autoit.aag, trojan.win32.generic etc.. Some of the problems have gone.

I now have MSE installed. Everything is not all right. Computer is slow & when i left click on any file or folder it changes to rename. I want to remove all problems & make this computer good again. Expecting help from this good site.

Let me update on some new problems:
When I schedule check-disk for C on next reboot, it doesn't run. In the blue screen it says checking has been cancelled. And on opening opera, sometimes a dialogue box titled go to page continuously blinks which will go only if I press Esc key. Now, I experimented a little and found this dialogue came on pressing F2 key. This continuous blinking repeated sometimes with just a press of F2 key and sometimes on continuously pressing the key.

Just thought that I would share these info in case it will help you. And I thank you for any help you are providing.

Leave updates on.

I don't see anything malicious there.

The main reason your computer is slow is this:

Total physical RAM: 239.36 MB

XP needs at least 512MB of RAM to run smoothly.
Get more RAM.

Hmm.. thats interesting. And all my other problems had something to do with F2 key. I don't know if I can add more RAM(this laptop is about 10 years old).

So there are no more malwares here. I have turned automatic updates on. Now can I do anything else other than adding more RAM.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

There is no malware present.

Low amount of RAM is definitely a problem.

Let's see what's running there.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Virtual memory doesn't do much as it uses hard drive as RAM substitute.
Hard drive is much slower than RAM.

You don't have too many startups there.

Re-run Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab and UN-check:
+ "Adobe ARM"
+ "HP Software Update"
+ "igfxpers"
+ "Local Group Policy" "XP Page File Monitor"
+ "SoundMan"
+ "Windows Search.lnk"

Restart computer and see how it goes.

Done. Only a small improvement in startup time has been observed. In autoruns some entries are highlighted in red and yellow, what do these mean?
