Google identified the fact that DNS was changed to one with a 213.xxx.xxx.xxx prefix. Router was hacked. Noone else uses the router. It had a password, though not that strong.

Running Windows 7 version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

I've run all of the programs on the DNSChanger Working Group site www.dcwg.org and none have identified the infection.
These include the following:
Kapersky TDSSKiller in SafeMode
McAffee Stinger in SafeMode
Microsoft Safety Scanner in SafeMode
Hitman Pro in SafeMode with Networking
Norton Power Eraser in SafeMode with Networking
TrendMicro Housecall in SafeMode with Networking
Microsoft Windows Defender Offline (Boots from CD)

I am looking for help in insuring that the system is clean.

Router has been replaced.

Appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome..

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Now we will work on the DNS changer,,,,

The problem is actually based in your router and that in turn is infecting all the other computers on your network.
Here is the entire fix(from the beginning) that you will need to run on each PC.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Next disconnect your system from the internet, and your router, then…

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE

However, if there are other Zlob-infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router's DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

Once you have ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the infected system, and reset the router to its default configuration you can reconnect to the internet, and router. Then return to this site to post your logs.

Thanks for your reply. I have done what you've said and posted below.

I first want to make clear that I replaced the infected Linksys router. That was a cheap thing to do.

Also, I installed Malware Anti-Malwarebytes as you said, and ran it even thought the database was 67 days old. Since I was disconnected from the internet, I couldn't update it after I installed it.

Here are the logs

Hi Sir,

It's been 4 days since I posted the logs you requested. They look clean to me (I'd love your opinion) but SOMETHING on my computer broke into my old router and changed the DNS settings. I have yet to identify the little bugger and I was hoping to run something that goes deeper.

I'd feel better if the infection was identified and eradicated rather than having the logs come up clean.

Forgive me if I've broken protocol. I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to wait for a response.

Hello, sorry I did not get notification.

For the connection try these...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

If needed : type these one line at a time, press enter after each line. See if it works after each.

netsh interface ipv4 reset
netsh interface ipv6 reset
ipconfig /flushdns

WIN7.. Please Download this file, Click Me
Right-click on winsockfix.bat and click on Run as Administrator.

Close all open web browsers and applications
In the Start Menu search box area type cmd and press Enter
Type or copy/paste ipconfig /flushdns followed by press the enter key
Windows will display a message similar to: “Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.”

Thanks, I have done what you say.

There is no log to post.

I don't really understand those last steps. I've had internet the whole time with my new router. My DNS server is my new router at 192.168.1.1. It hasn't changed again.

I have never been able to identify the virus that changed the DNS settings on the old router. I have no reason to believe that it has left my computer.
None of the tools I have run so far has identified it.

I would like to run something deep like ComboFix that will identify and eradicate whatever virus changed the DNS settings on the old router when this problem first surfaced.

Can you help me with that?

Ok, before you run it we need to move and post a DDS log first.

To get a deeper look. Please go here....Preparation Guide ,do steps 6-9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9 which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If GMER won't run (it may not on a 64 bit system) skip it and move on.

Let me know if that went well.
