Creating an animated gif that is not 12mb

I used virtual dub to edit down a movie clip and export as an animated gif. It's a huge 12 mb file, and i want to upload it to have a link to post for people. What is my best way to go about reducing this? Or starting over with the video file and use a different program to edit it down. Thanks.
