Hi

I recently had and,with this site's help, successfully (or so I thought)removed the "SMART HDD" virus/malware.

However some part of it must still be in my pc as every time I try to run Internet explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome etc the program does not start and instead I get the generic windows error "program name" has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I get a similar message when trying to run your rkill program amd also when trying to access internet options from the control panel.

My operating system is Windows XP.

I have managed a work around by renaming the Google Chrome executable file as chrome2.exe.

I thank you in advance and look forward to your replies.

Regards

Rob

Hi Broni

I have pasted below the Malwarebytes log as requested.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400
www.malwarebytes.org

Database version: v2012.06.11.03

Windows XP Service Pack 3 x86 FAT32
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702
rvb :: PC9999 [administrator]

11/06/2012 08:46:43
mbam-log-2012-06-11 (08-46-43).txt

Scan type: Quick scan
Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM
Scan options disabled: P2P
Objects scanned: 375721
Time elapsed: 29 minute(s), 27 second(s)

Memory Processes Detected: 1
C:\WINDOWS\explorer1.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> 268 -> Delete on reboot.

Memory Modules Detected: 0
(No malicious items detected)

Registry Keys Detected: 0
(No malicious items detected)

Registry Values Detected: 0
(No malicious items detected)

Registry Data Items Detected: 1
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon|Shell (Trojan.Agent) -> Bad: (explorer1.exe) Good: () -> Quarantined and repaired successfully.

Folders Detected: 0
(No malicious items detected)

Files Detected: 3
C:\WINDOWS\explorer1.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.
C:\Documents and Settings\administrator.DH\My Documents\Downloads\uSeRiNiT.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\rvb\My Documents\Downloads\WiNlOgOn.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

(end)

I do not understand the detection within HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon|Shell, part of the problem I originally had meant that I had no task bar or start button so what I did was get a copy of explorer.exe rename it as explorer1.exe and copy it to windows directory then edit the above registry key so that I had the task bar etc back.

Following the restart the task bar disappeared again so I will have to do the same again, is the malwarebytes program picking this up as an issue as it expects to see the shell value as explorer.exe and not explorer1.exe?

I look forward to your reply.

Thanks and regards

Rob

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

  • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users,right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL+C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  • Post the output back here.

====================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I appear to have another problem now, you will see from an earlier post that I had issues with the task bar and start button not responding so I copied explorer.exe from another pc renamed it explorer1.exe and changed the registry key for HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon|Shell from explorer.exe to explorer1.exe and all was working fine.

Now for some reason the task bar and start button respond but when i try to click explorer, my computer or just open a folder I get a explorer.exe has a problem and has to close message, any ideas?

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Unzipping the file did not create a folder, just the tdsskiller.exe file and eula.txt.

I double clicked tdsskiller.exe but nothing happened!

I also tried to run in safe mode, nothing!

Something is there but I can't have a clear view with tools allowed in this forum.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Thanks
