I have an gateway desktop e series running windows xp pro. I tried to turn it on the other day and after a few attempts I get the same black screen and an error message saying "Error loading Operating System". I tried to load it into safe mode and off of the HD neither work, I do have some files on there I would like to save, so if I need to re-install the os, how can I save some/if any files.

If you can boot from a cd, you can download one of the many live CD versions of linux, boot into linux from the cd and you should be able to access your hard drive files and copy them to a usb drive. I've always liked knoppix for that.
