I have an older (2001) HP Pavilion 521 N with an AMD Athlon processer 1.8GHz(I think). It's been a reliable computer. Now I'm having problems with it -- namely, it'll shut down without warning after an hour or 2 of use.

What should I do to diagnose and or fix this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you cleaned the inside out resently? Heat is a big problem and can often be avoided with PC housekeeping.

acklan has some great advice. It sounds like a heat problem. And if your computer is in a room with a carpet on the floor, it is amazing how much carpet fluff can get inside a computer case.
