I'm not sure if I have a malware problem or what, but I thought I'd post here to see if someone has a better idea of what's going on than I do.

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, and have 6 GB RAM installed.

I checked my Task Manager maybe a couple months ago when I noticed my computer starting to hiccup a lot, and I discovered possibly strangely high RAM usage. Every time I check, it seems that at least 5.45 GB of the 6 GB are in use. I do have some background programs running, like Steam, Skype, etc., and I unfortunately cannot remember when I started noticing my computer hanging up and whether I installed any new programs then. I do know, though, that I used to be able to paint in Photoshop quite smoothly, and lately, it's so choppy that I have a really hard time working on artwork of the same size and resolution, so I'm fairly certain it wasn't always so bad.

I've already run a virus scan (Kaspersky Internet Security, nothing came up) and defragged my drive to try to improve things.

Do you think this is a malware problem, and is there some way to fix this?

Thanks very much for your time and help!

First of all, Vista and Seven handles RAM in a different way than XP.
In layman terms it'll take all RAM it can get and cache it for immediate use if needed.
More info: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/09/why-does-vista-use-all-my-memory.html

However in your case you seem to have some issues which affect computer's performance.

Let's take a look....

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.

Upload the file(s) here: http://uploadmb.com/
Copy the link inside the Direct Link box and post it in your next reply.

CPU usage is almost 20% so it's a bit high.
What did you have running at the time you ran PE?

I think I had Skype, Firefox (1 window), and some background programs running (Steam, Kaspersky antivirus, etc.). I didn't have much actively open.

Is it fairly new computer?

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Nothing malicious there.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Post new Process Explorer log.

This one looks very good.
It means that some of your non-MS services/startups is giving you headache.

You'll need some time to investigate.
Go back to "msconfig" and start re-enabling services and startups you previously disabled, BUT one-by-one, restarting computer after each item and running Process Explorer until you find the culprit.
Look at the very first line. In your latest log it reads:

System Idle Process 0 99.43(%) 0 K 24 K

Number in red indicates % of CPU NOT used.
In your first log (with everything running) it read around 81(%).
