Diplay Port monitor

I bought a HP monitor that has a Display Port input,...my desk top has VGA out,...is it possible to hook up?

yes it possible I dont know how long you can go (cable wise) with that setup but VGA to Display Port http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882203129

Not with that adapter listed above.

Exactly! Every adapter I found was designed to take a VGA monitor and hook it up to a display port on the video card and not the other way around. Trying to use them backwards won't work due to the electronics involved.

My suggestion for the opening poster would be return the monitor for one with more standard video connectors or alternatively change the video card to one that has a Display port out to the monitor.
