Sorry to bother you all. I'm normally a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to computer issues.

For several days now, I've had something that causes Firefox and other internet software (IE and other browsers, also scripts that access the internet) to randomly crash. Also, I can no longer run VMWare. (As a side note, I wanted to extract my files from the VMWare virtual disk. A message on ehow.com suggested using PowerISO, but it didn't work because PowerISO doesn't open vdi files. Also, when I installed PowerISO, it put "AVG security toolbar" on my machine without permission and I can't figure out how to remove it. But that's a separate issue.)

Also, sometimes I get an error message that C:\Windows\System32\cryptsp.dll cannot run because it was not designed to run on Windows. I don't have the exact text of the error message. (I print-screened it, but accidentally hit Ctrl-C on something else before I pasted it anywhere.) The next time it occurs I'll try to write it down.

I have gone through the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help" process.

Any help which anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Error messages:

I get two different kinds of error message. The first looks like this:

BelkinSetup.exe - Application Error

The instruction at 0x10009433 referenced memory at 0x00000030. The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program

The program name and memory addresses are sometime different.

The other message looks like this:

opera.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\dhcpcsvc6.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

The application running and the system file is different each time.

After either of these messages, I cannot run anything and need to reboot. Even Ctrl-alt-del won't work.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please post the logs for my review.

OK, I've run the two programs you've recommended and attached their output files.

BTW, between writing my initial message and now I've run some other anti-virus software in an effort to fix this, namely: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Windows Defender, and Microsoft Security Essentials. None of them found anything.

Thank-you for helping me.

I notice that you seem to be trying several things here, including doing something with the Belkin router drivers and AVG Security Toolbar. Just to let you know, I have already re-named the directories containing those files by adding an X to the end of the directory name. So the programs will probably report that they could not find them.

OK, I increased the size of the space reserved for system restore points from 1% to 10% of the hard drive. I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

Well, this is amazing! Firefox has been running for over 24 hours without a problem (it used to crash after an hour or two). And Virtualbox, which had been running slower and slower over the past couple of months, now runs as quickly as it did when I first installed it! Thank-you!!!

So.... Does this mean my problem wasn't a virus? Just some bad default setting on Windows 7 that fricked everything up?

At any rate, thank-you for your help. Thank-you.

Sure looks like it.

Wait a day or two and if all is well:

Time for some housekeeping

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall
