My daughter's laptop is 5 years old and she has been having trouble keeping a network connection. Recently, her system could not see any wireless networks. After starting in safe mode with networking, the wireless networks appeared again. While I'm thinking it could be a hardware issue, when I ran HJT, I noticed she has a ton of items in the startup tab. When starting the system, she gets a warning that some programs have been blocked during start up. I'm unsure as to what can be removed and I read the notes regarding NOT using msconfig as a means of disabling start-up programs. I would appreciate your time in reviewing the HJT log below and hopefully return her laptop to a more reliable state. I have run malwarebytes 1.46 but no infections were found. Here is her HJT log:

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:

We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Fix the items identified in the HijackThis log below. Your call.


Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
