I installed Windows 7 Enterprise N (64) on my work machine. Weeks after getting it set up and customized, it says I need to activate.
The keycode I got from Microsoft Technet, so I know it to be the right key for the OS although I'm starting to wonder if it had already been used.

When I click "activate online" it states, "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0x8007007b." (screenshot below) Clicking for more information says "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Can anyone help me defeat this Windows problem?

Hi -
Check to see if you have two C: drives in the listing with the same Volume label.
Deselect the checkbox for the duplicate volume, and enable the checkbox for the correct drive (the one with Windows logo).
See This Post for a small diagram - -
If this fails read For getting the M/soft Key -Download Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder in Zip file > Unzip (extract files) and use the program to find your Genuine M/soft Key -
This will give you your (typical) CD Key: TVxxx-VxxxD-Dxxx6-CxxxG-2xxx8
All my numbers and letters are altered or replaced by xxx to show you a typical result (5 sets of 5 letters and numbers)

I think the first one sounds like your issue -

Thank You

FWIW: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-activation-error-code-0x8007007b/6bfc63a0-9f46-e011-9bac-78e7d160ad4e

Phone activation is the route I would take...fast and painless, IME.

To Reset Grace Period of an activation to reset grace person back to 30 days.

Open a elevated command prompt Start type in cmd Right Click Run as Administrator

type in slmgr /rearm and press enter

That command can be only executed three times.

if you working on a phone activation, Personally I would talk to a rep not the computer

Thanks for the replies. I shortcut around the problem, but first my replies:

noknojon,
I do not have multiple C: drives (in my computer or in system restore)
I did find that I have C:/windows as well as C:/windows.old.
I got the key with keyfinder and entered it once more & windows gave me the same error.

Louis,
Typing in slui.exe /4 gives me an activation window but the dropdown menu to choose your location is grayed out. Clicking next gives me what I presume to be the afghan number however it does give me numbers of the installation ID.

coxchris
thanks for the slmgr /rearm command - I was having to type a much longer string to do the same.

HOW I RESOLVED IT: Well, I cheated and went back to technet for another KeyCode. This key activated successfully. As much as I enjoy troubleshooting, I'm not a fan of it on my main work PC.
