I've started to use my old laptop as our main one is currently broken down, sadly I have forgotten my administrator password on my laptop and can't access the files originally saved in that area nor do I have the privileges of using the administrator account.

Another mistake is that I do not have a password reset key, or what ever it is called. So I have no idea on how to access my account..

Please Help!

1. First reboot Window 7 in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeatedly as the computer boots up. If you miss the right moment, you will neet to repeat the attempt.
2. Then in (safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type the words exactly as following (without quotes) - control userpasswords2.
3. You will now get a pop-up window with full access to all the user accounts, including the administrator account. From here, you will be able to reset the lost or forgotten password.
4. Just click the administrator's user account, and then click Reset Password.
5. At this moment, you will have to add a new password in the New password field, and then Confirm new password as well. Confirm the new chosen password by clicking OK.

If it doesn't work in your case try to follow detailed steps to fix the problem here http://www.techyv.com/questions/i-forgot-my-admin-password

Hi MJLiebgott,

I can recomend the solution put forward by CoxChris - the Hirens Boot CD works.

I have recently had to decontaminate a laptop belonging to an elderly friend of mine - he shouldn't be allowed near a computer except under armed escort - and he had a serious mental block about his access password ! Difficult to do anything to a computer if you can't get into it.

Hirens just removed them completely. I got it cleaned up and back to normal working, AND he doesn't have to try and remember his password again !

You can download the Hirens CD from any number of places on the web, just Google for it.

For those suggesting Hiren's as a solution...please read:

Hiren's is included in the tools covered by Recommending ISOs of Windows Recovery Discs or pre-made ISOs of WinPE-BartPE - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic382841.html .

Do you remember your special "secret" when you applied the password?
