Posted 25 May 2012 - 11:00 AM

I recently had to do a fresh install after a system repair install failed. Things were pretty smooth for a few weeks. I have been adding back software from my old install, which is now on a separate partition. Suddenly, I have a lot of BSOD's. I tried a system restore to the day before I started experiencing the BSOD's.

I ran chkdsk by letting it run on a reboot. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode, and I ran a full scan with Avast in boot scan mode. I replaced some driver files that were described in prior BlueScreenView reports, but the report seems to change each time, Page Fault, IRQL_not_Less, Kernel_Mode_exception, etc.

I reinstalled the Intel chip drivers for my motherboard early yesterday and thought things were good (they are much better). But then I had another crash this morning.

Here is the BlueScreenView report:

Can you post the machine specs./model and the current operating system (service pack/edition)being used? Have you tried running any hardware diagnostic for the RAM and hard drive aside form reinstalling the related drivers?

Thanks for your reply, I should have stated the specs and OS in the OP.

It is a home build. Quite a few years old now. I am planning on popping in a new PSU this weekend as I am running out of ideas.

ASUS P4P800 deluxe motherboard

ATI RADEON x800 Pro video card

I'm not sure what other hardware may be relevant.

running Windows XP Pro SP3 version 5.1.2600

I added more RAM and upgraded CPU about 6 months or so ago. At the time, I ran memtest and some CPU/system testing software and all was good.

I have not run any Hard Disk Diagnostics other than chkdsk recently. Do you have a recommendation?

On other note. I can walk away from the system with no user programs running, just the idle desktop. And when I return in an hour or so, the system has rebooted and indicated a BSOD condition on logging in.

Test the hard drive.
It is best to use the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility, but Seagate's tool will work OK on most brands. The diagnostic tool is run from a bootable CD (Windows does not need to be working. The first two steps are done on a working computer, while the third step is to boot the ailing computer with the CD that you create in the first two steps.)

:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO

:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
[/list]Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

When you can, include the make and model number of the problematic hard drive. If you do choose to use SeaTools, you will see the model number (and maybe the make) when SeaTools first detects the hard drive.

====================
Let's collect some more information: I'll have a look at it and help you try to resolve the problem.

:step1: Download the following 2 files and save both to the My Documents folder:

:step2: Go to the My Documents folder and run #1 (BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe). (That will also run #2.)

It will take a little time to complete: Please be patient and wait for it to finish.
A new folder named TSF_XP_Support will be created in My Documents.

:step3: Zip up the newly created TSF_XP_Support folder.
  • Right-click on the TSF_XP_Support folder > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The newly created zip file will be located in the My Documents folder.

:step4: Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file.

Note: The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb (and what you need to attach will exceed this limit).
See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:

:step5: Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

:step6: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

... the report seems to change each time, Page Fault, IRQL_not_Less, Kernel_Mode_exception, etc.

Yes, supporting the likelihood that overclocking the CPU is the culprit in this case.

MaxSpeed: 2800

Return the system to default settings and see whether or not the problem continues.

If the system crashes with default settings, please zip up the last minidump and attach to your reply:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
The minidumps will be found inside this folder.
  • Right-click on the most recent minidump file > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

I am grateful for your reply and your insights. I really appreciate your taking the time and trouble to look things over for me.

I have dropped the OC back to standard, and I will replace the PSU later. This old PSU is way too noisy.

I want to tell you that I did extensive testing of both the ram, the cpu and the combination of the two over many days to find the probable point of failure for these items. That was about 10 months ago. I set the values back several notches below the point where failure would occur, and the system was running just fine until after the emergency repair install failure.

When the BSOD's started, I dropped the RAM back to auto values (which are far below spec for the ram) and dropped the CPU back further as well.

A newer PSU failed due to cabling issues at the same time that I was trouble shooting the emergency repair install (unrelated issues I think) and I was awaiting replacment. The older CPU has been in since the end of April when the new install was performed. The BSOD's started 5/18.

I also have completed the HDD tests, using the windows version of Western Digitals drive diagnostic. Both the system drive (Hard Drive #2 WD7502AAEX-00Y9A0) and my data drive (Hard Drive #1 ST3320620AS) passed the extended testing.

I'm telling you this so that I can ask you, do you see anything else that could be leading to these errors? I realize that hardware can degrade over time, but given that the values used were margined below failure, I'm concerned that something else is going on.

do you see anything else that could be leading to these errors?

At this time, no, I don't see anything else that might be giving the BSOD errors showing up in the BSV report.

Give the system a good workout with the default settings in place, and see if you can break it!

Run Driver Verifier for 36 hours if you wish to try that also.

======================
Run Driver Verifier following the instructions DRIVER VERIFIER - Windows 7 & Vista ... by jcgriff2
  • Notes:
  • There are a few minor differences for XP, but the steps are essentially the same.
    • You will notice that a couple of the options are not available when manually configuring Driver Verifier in XP.
  • Do not omit the first step, to create a System Restore point before enabling Driver Verifier.
  • Read the instructions on how to check the Driver Verifier Status.
  • Read the instructions on how To Turn Driver Verifier OFF when you have finished with it.
  • Read the instructions (and record them on paper so you have them if needed) about what to do IF you cannot start the system normally after it crashes under Driver Verifier.
  • Run Driver Verifier for 36 hours unless the system crashes. It doesn't matter whether you are using the computer or not during that time.
If your system BSOD’s under the Driver Verifier
  • Locate the dump file:
    • C:\Windows\minidump <<< folder

There is something I forgot to mention ...

The two Event logs previously collected by the jcgriff2 application are corrupt.

Please gather the info by the following means, and upload it for my review.

:exclame: Create a new folder on your Desktop, and name it EventLogs.

:step1: Event logs
  • Go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc and press <ENTER>
  • When the Event Viewer window has opened, on the left side, click on System.
  • On the top main menu bar, click Action > Save Log File As ...
  • Enter system as the "File Name" and choose the EventLogs folder on your Desktop as the "Location" to save it.
(Leave the "Save as type:" as the default setting of "Event Log (*.evt)").
  • Click Save.
Do the same for the Application log:
  • On the left side, click on Application.
  • On the top main menu bar, click Action > Save Log File As ...
  • Enter application as the "File Name" and choose the EventLogs folder on your Desktop as the "Location" to save it.
(Leave the "Save as type:" as the default setting of "Event Log (*.evt)").
  • Click Save.
Close the Event Viewer window.

:step2: At your Desktop, zip up the EventLogs folder
  • Right-click on the folder > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
.
and attach the zip file to your next post in this thread.
  • When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.
Note: The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb and what you need to attach may exceed this limit. In that case, please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file.

See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:

OK this is getting interesting... at least for me.

In my excitement at the suggestion of running driver verifier, I either missed your second note about the event logs, or you hadn't posted it yet.

I ran verifier and it would not even make it to the log on screen. Since I use BlueScreenViewer, I let the computer reboot itself on a BSOD, and the computer started to loop at the login screen back to a reboot. It generated 2 dumpfiles in 5 minutes and I have included both in the zip.

Then I saw your note about the event logs, and have put all 4 files into a zip folder.

My event logs appear to be fine and not corrupt when I view them.

I anxiously await your opinion.

Just in case anyone comes across this in a search, I discovered there is a known issue with this driver, diginet.sys causing BSOD's. The workaround is to delete the NIC in the Device manager, then scan for hardware changes and let it reinstall. The NIC needs to be at the top of the list in the registry, which apparently that action will do.

The function of the driver is to facilitate control of the program via ethernet connection. I do not use this function, so I removed the driver from the Control Panel> Local Area Connection > General tab.

This is one time I did not follow your explicit directions. I removed the driver from the NIC, and then rebooted with verifier on. I checked verifier status and it confirmed that the driver did not load. Unless you feel it is absolutely necessary, I'd rather not uninstall that program as re-installing it and the software that works with it is a lot of work.

Having said that, I BSOD' again. This time with what looks like a driver for my Anti-virus avast! It occured as I clicked on a program that is somewhat large and resource intensive.

I have not replaced the PSU yet.

------ update ---
ran with verifier again, looks like exact same crash. I'm guessing I should uninstall and re-install avast or a repair

Not a problem: I think you know pretty much what you are doing. Thanks for letting us know what you have learned and what you have done.

Please zip up and attach any new minidumps to a reply so that I can examine them before commenting.

====== edit=======
Just realized I didn't upload the prior minidumps when I though I had. Guess I never clicked "attach file"

===============

OK, here is what transpired since last post.

I was getting the BSOD's pointing to avast virtualization driver. I also happened to notice that AVG Safe Search bar was installed. I had noticed it once or twice the last week or so, not sure how long I have had it.

I uninstalled it, and when I rebooted, Chrome was also uninstalled. I re-installed Chrome.

I uninstalled avast and rebooted. I setup verifier and rebooted. I ran the program that was always causing the BSOD with verifier on and avast installed, and there was no crash.

I turned off verifier and re-installed avast.

I turned on verifier, ran the resource heavy program and BSOD's again

Attached is the latest minidump.

Surprised and happy to see you here on a Sunday.

Suggestion: Remove avast! and try a different free antivirus.
  • Uninstall avast! in the usual manner.
  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility and run it (following the directions on the download page).
  • Download and install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)
