Greetings,

Every time I turn on my computer, I get an error message that says update.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. When I run Microsoft Update, I keep getting the same error that "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 on Windows XP Tablet PC and Media Center (KB2656378)" has failed to download. Every time I turn off my computer it asks me to download and install available updates (but nothing installs). I have gotten two BSOD's recently (I don't remember the exact error phrasing, but if it happens again I will attempt to write it down before the computer restarts).

Additionally, every evening Avast begins taking up huge amounts of resources (around 50-60% -- the process name is AvastUI.exe), and csrss.exe takes up the remaining CPU power to where the computer grinds to a halt. It would not let me close the process, or even open the Avast interface -- it's like it locked me out. To try to fix it I uninstalled and reinstalled Avast.

I have run the following scans to try and find any bad files: MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Avast virus scan and Windows Defender, and had no hits on any of the scans. I also ran Disk Defragmenter, Disk Cleanup, CCleaner, CHKDSK and Page Defrag.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Close any open browsers, and all other programs working. Make sure you save your file if working on a document.
  • Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.[/b]
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause of infiltration an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please post the logs and let me know what problem persists.

I can't tell a difference in computer performance after running the scan, but I did get a BSOD while running ComboFix the first time about one minute into the scan. The error message said KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR. The computer ran CHKDSK when it restarted.

ComboFix log:

When I run Microsoft Update, I keep getting the same error that "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 on Windows XP Tablet PC and Media Center (KB2656378)" has failed to download. Every time I turn off my computer it asks me to download and install available updates (but nothing installs)

Try this.

1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the Notepad file:

net stop wuauserv
CD %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
Ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv

3. On the File menu, click Save as.
4. In the File name box, type rename.bat, and then click All Files in the Save as type box.
5. Save the rename.bat file to the desktop.
6. Double-click the rename.bat file to register the Windows Update files.
7. Try to install updates again.

The update finally installed with that notepad file, but the computer still tries to install some type of phantom update every time I turn it off.

I ran the manual update and it installed two security updates. Afterward I did it again just to check, and it installed them again. It's as if the computer didn't update that it had them. Now, I keep getting system messages that "wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." with the standard error reporting options to Microsoft. I have a feeling this is related to the overall problem since this service has to do with Windows Automatic Update. I have received the message about ten times in the last minute. I am restarting the computer after I send this to try and get the popups to stop.

Thanks for the help.
Cheers.

Lets have a look at that file.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :filefind
    wuauclt.exe

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Execute this.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

FCOPY::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\wuauclt.exe | C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Let me know what problem persists.

Ran the Comboxfix script. It finished, but as it displayed the message about creating a log and not to open any other programs, I got another BSOD, so I don't have the log. Message was KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR. Stop Code was 0x00000077 (0x00000001,0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0xF2214C34)

Additionally, now I keep getting two continuous popups. The first says "Data Execution Prevention. To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program: Windows Update." When I click close message, I get an error reporting message that says "Automatic Updates has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." After I close that, the first one pops up again about five seconds later and repeats in a loop.

Going to restart to try and get rid of the popups, then run combofix again.
