Hey guys about 3 days ago a message popped up in the bottom corner of my screen, Security Essentials told me that there was a potential threat, something like win32.hacktools.keygen. So I hit remove and then started a MBAM scan which found nothing. Figured I was good to go. Then I restart the computer a few hours later and the same message popped up. This time I was a little worried so I restored the computer to a time 3 days earlier. Everything seemed fine until this morning when I restarted the computer and once again, the message appeared. I searched google for about an hour and could not find a solution so I restored the computer back as far as possible, which I think was about 10 days. I've restarted the computer about 5 times and so far nothing, but I've learned with computers so far to never get your hopes up.

Well.. My younger brother goes to start up his computer, which he hasn't used in a week. He comes to tell me that there is a message that just popped up on his computer, I look and guess what? win32.hacktools.keygen.

We built both our computers at the same time. A guy from my brother's work told us that building computers is a lot less expensive and said that he would help us and we went with that. The only problem was, to save more money, he gave us a non-legit copy of Windows 7 and Office 2010. This was over a year ago and we've had no problems until now. I'm kind of hoping that the keygen has been there since he helped us and MSE just never noticed it but... that would probably be a little too convenient. Both computers should have had a firewall. The only thing I can think of that's been downloaded in the last week is that I went to Minecraft's website and wanted to play the free version, which needed Java. So I downloaded Java through their website and then played Minecraft with no issues.

I really, really hate viruses(lol.. I suppose there aren't many people that enjoy them) and would appreciate any help and advice you guys give me. That compromised feeling kind of sucks especially when everyone in my family does their online banking, etc on some of these computers. I want them to be as safe as possible. I know a clean install would help a little but I want to avoid this until I can afford to buy legit copies of Windows for both PC's. Last time I ever let someone convince me to do otherwise....

One computer per topic please.

So far I don't see anything malicious.

MiniToolbox log is incomplete.
Your forgot to checkmark "List IP configuration".
Re-run MiniToolbox with only the above item checkmarked.

Then....

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

  • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users, right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL+C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  • Post the output back here.

=========================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

All looks clean.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Nothing came up with the scan. Is this a pretty good sign that all is clear?

If yes what steps should I take to begin checking the other computer that came up with the same original symptoms?

P.S. Thank you so much for your help.

You're very welcome Posted Image

As for the other computer, create new topic.

Here.....

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

5. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

6. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

7. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

8. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

9. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

10. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

11. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.
