At least, I think it is the hard drive. I have had this rig for about 2 or 3 years now and the hard drive is about the only thing in it (with moving parts) that hasn't been upgraded so I am guessing it is the hard drive.

Every now and then, it makes this audible click. It's not repetitive. Some days it never happens, some times it happens multiple times a day. When this click occurs their is no slow down or halt or any effect on the computer or what the computer is doing, so I do not think it is a drive malfunction or defect.

Does anyone have any idea what this click is all about?

Back up your data first.

Then...

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

It's a Hitachi drive by the way.

It ran through a basic test just fine and exited with no disposition code. 0x00.

I am running an advanced test now and will edit this post when it finishes.

Advanced test completed. Disposition code 0x00. All is good. Doesn't seem to be a bad thing what ever this click is.
