Thanks for reading and helping!
My desktop computer has been experiencing a very unstable internet connection. The provider says it's working fine! (I disagree, but I really want to be sure it's not on my end.) Normally, I use a DSL modem connected to a Dell Router. I have one wired desktop and two wireless laptops. Each of the computers experience the same issues - which is an, at times, very, very slow internet or a network that seems to crash constantly. I have not noticed any uniformity when this happens, i.e: all computers on, one computer on, wired vs. wireless, etc... there seems to be no rhyme or reason. I occasionally open the task manager and watch the wireless connection EKG thingy and sure enough, the prognosis doesn't look good. Repeated loss of network and/or internet. I have since tried to eliminate the router, and using a straight wired connection to my desktop, in hopes I would get to buy a new, bigger and badder router. But nope, same issues. I'm willing to buy new Ethernet cables, rerun my phone lines, but my provider's 'speed test' says the connection is fine!?! I just don't think so, as I have screenshots of the 'speed test' not so fine. So is it my computer then?
I have power cycled. I have reset the LAN. I even built a new network just to make sure it was all fresh and clean. I do normal maintenance on all my PC's, including one or more of: Kaspersky, CCleaner, Avast, Malwarebytes, etc...And even knowing I do that, I still feel there is a chance I'm missing something. That there is something deep-rooted that I just cannot locate or was there prior to my current security tools. I have a external HD, so I'm really not attached to much on the PC itself, so I'd like to do a pretty good sweep to be sure that it is, in fact, the connection, and nothing else.
EDIT: I'm constantly alarmed by how much use the desktop makes of the cooling fan. Even in the middle of the night I'll hear the fan turn on and work harder than it did all day - while the computer was being used. It seems as though the PC is doing something, updating, etc... but I can't figure out what it's running or updating.
I'll be happy to provide quick and complete responses, and I will follow the instructions completely.
Thank you in advance for helping, I hope a solution is near!
