I think I may have a possible malware infection on my PC (due to my own stupidity, I confess) and I would appreciate any assistance this forum could provide in making sure my PC is clean.

I have done two stupid things in this situation <_< - the first was giving in to temptation and using uTorrent to download some documentaries I'd been having trouble finding.
At some point well into the download, I got a 'system cannot find the file specified' error - I cannot recall which file as very shortly after that windows explorer and chrome crashed and closed down.
As soon as I saw this happen I rebooted my PC into safe mode and have run scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Emsisoft antimalware, Microsoft Security Essentials and TDSSKiller.
All find nothing, but this type of behaviour I have not seen before in an infected machine (not mine, my old flatmate was a devil for clicking on anything online) and I'm paranoid.

So I did the next stupid thing and on the basis of recommendation seen elsewhere I panicked a bit and ran combofix. Combofix ran without a problem, but broke one of my most used programs - Nexus mod manager. Every time I tried to run this program (and seemingly only this one) I got 'device attached to the system is not functioning' errors.
I then realised my mistake and reloaded to a system restore point I had made immediately before running Combofix.
So my PC is now in a state where Combifix has not been run, Nexus Mod Manager is working, and I have uninstalled uTorrent.

My PC seems to be functioning normally, I had no issues updating or running any antivirus/spyware.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials, Spywareblaster and Spybot ordinarily, and keep Malwarebytes/Emsisoft for on-demand scanning only.
In termos of other PC maintenance programs, CCcleaner and Slimcleaner for cleaning out registry/temp files and keeping my startup programs in order.
No other P2P software, and uTorrent is now gone.
Nothing unusual appears to be set to autorun.

Windows 7 64-bit SP1

I would prefer to stop doing stupid things now, and if anyone here could help me with diagnosing the state of my machine I would be grateful - I can post any logs you require.

All looks clean so far.

Couple more checks...

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

I'll run TFC tonight.
I can run another ESET scan if you like, though I ran a full one last night overnight (took about 11 hours!). It was clean and produced no log.
If you want though, I can run another overnight tonight?

In that case skip Eset.

Uninstall Java™ 6 Update 22.

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

5. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

6. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

7. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

8. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

9. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

10. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

11. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.

TFC is done. I'll get rid of the older java (thought I already had) I'm good with resetting system restore.

Everything else I do regularly anyway, and I have web of trust. I'm usually pretty security conscious, and update all my security programs at least weekly, i'll often check daily if I'm logged on anyway. I think I just had a derp  moment and was lucky enough to come out of it with just a bit of a scare.
I had PSI installed before, but for some reason it wouldn't run on my PC. I didn't get any error, just nothing happened.
I'll give it another try though and see if it behaves.

I'd like to thank you very much for taking the time to trawl through those logs and assist me, I really appreciate it :thumbup2:
