Hello,

First I want to say thanks for any assistance and your time. It is appreciated. :thumbup2: This one is way past my limited knowledge.

System is XP Home SP3, using IE8 with downloads disbled and TrendMicro Internet Security with tight parental controls set up. The system is set up with two accounts only, Administrator account I only use for maintenance and a limited access account that is used by everyone all the time.

Yesterday my ten year old came and told me the antivirus was blocking everything. Determined that it was some version of the Google Redirect bug. 9/10 Google links are blocked by Trend as going to 64.15.72.104, what isn't blocked takes you to random ad pages, an occasional ebay store or things like "Get Answers Fast". Sometimes a white screen with a small green "REDIRECT" logo appears as it shifts the site. Some links do proceed ok without interference but not many.

TrendMicro, MalWareBytes, NOD32, TDSS Killer etc find nothing. Only the family limited access account has the issue, the Admin account is fine. On shutdown/reboot in the family access account an error showed that "Rundll32.exe" had an issue and could not close. When running, if you close "Rundll32.exe" from the task manager the redirect bug is disabled with no issue.

I am providing the logs as the tutorial requested. Again.....a big thanks!

Good evening. :)

The were run from the Admin account which does not exhibit the bug behavior but I assume this does not matter.

Nope. You'll need to log into the affected account, run DDS again, and post both the logs that it creates.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Good evening to you as well. I deleted the original DDS logs and placed the new ones in the original post to be less confusing.

The GMER log is the same one run on the admin acct as I wasn't directed to rerun that one.

It just occured to me that I had also run TDSSKiller on the admin acct only, i won't rerun it on the user side unless asked to.

Good evening. :)

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button and a new window will open - you may need to maximise it.
  • Click the Run ESET Online Scanner button in the new window.
  • If you are using any other browser than IE, you will be prompted to download and run esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and the scan will run from within the window that the executable opens.
  • Regardless of which browser you are using, you will be shown some terms and conditions and you will need to accept these to continue.
  • If you are running IE for this scan you will then be prompted to allow an ActiveX component to be downloaded, unless you already have it installed, and the scan will run inside IE.
  • When you see the Computer Scan Settings window, you will need to make the following changes:

    • UNCHECK Remove found threats - this is important.
    • Check Scan archives
    • Click on Advanced settings
    • Check Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Once ready, click Start to begin - not a surprise really!
  • The anti-virus definitions will now be downloaded, so don't forget to allow them through your firewall if prompted.
  • The above will take a little time, so now is a good time to fire up the kettle and open the biccies.
  • Once the scan has completed you will be shown the results - assuming that the scanner has found anything.
  • Click List of found threats and then Export to text file... and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • You can then close out the scanner - don't bother uninstalling it as you may need to use it again.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply, or let me know that nothing was identified.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Good evening. :)

Download OTL by OldTimer from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • Check the Scan All User box at the top.
  • Copy and paste the following into the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom:

    • netsvcs
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
      /md5start
      consrv.dll
      explorer.exe
      winlogon.exe
      Userinit.exe
      svchost.exe
      /md5stop
      C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
      %Temp%\smtmp\1\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\2\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\3\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\4\*.*
      >C:\commands.txt echo list vol /raw /hide /c
      /wait
      >C:\DiskReport.txt diskpart /s C:\commands.txt /raw /hide /c
      /wait
      type c:\diskreport.txt /c
      /wait
      erase c:\commands.txt /hide /c
      /wait
      erase c:\diskreport.txt /hide /c
      CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Run Scan button and allow it to do it's thing.
  • Once the scan has completed two notepad windows, OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt, will open - these text files will be saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please post the contents of both in your next reply - you may need to post each seperately if they are overly long.

I'd like you to do this for both the accounts, but make sure you indicate which pair of logs is which.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Good evening again. PC has gotten no better or worse, I have only used it minimally until it gets squared away. The Admin side still appears ok and the user side still has the issue (when shutting down it also still tells me that "Rundll32.exe" is still running and having trouble shutting down. I forgot to add that when the pc first showed issues and I logged into the Admin side Windows Update ran and I believe Java and Flash Player also updated.

I have run OTL as requested on both accounts. The first two logs are from the infected side and the third log is from the "clean" side.

FYI....when I ran OTL on the clean side it did not create the Extras.txt report. I ran it again and it still just offered the OTL.txt report so I have only that one to show.

Logs from infected account...

Good evening. :)

FYI....when I ran OTL on the clean side it did not create the Extras.txt report. I ran it again and it still just offered the OTL.txt report so I have only that one to show.

No worries.

Do the following on the Admin account:

Run OTL.exe.

  • Copy and paste the following into the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom:

    :OTL
    O4 - HKU\S-1-5-21-1482476501-413027322-725345543-1004..\Run: [Adobe] C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Adobe\voxcxsomw.dll (MainConcept GmbH)

    O16 - DPF: {8FFBE65D-2C9C-4669-84BD-5829DC0B603C} http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/ultrashim.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)
    O16 - DPF: {E2883E8F-472F-4FB0-9522-AC9BF37916A7} http://platformdl.adobe.com/NOS/getPlusPlus/1.6/gp.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Adobe\voxcxsomw.dll

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]

  • Click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Let the program run until it has completed and then reboot the PC when it is done.
Please let me have a copy of the log that appears once OTL has completed it's run.

Note:If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post. The name of the log will in the following format: xxxxxxxx_xxxxxx. x representing the month, date, year and time the log was created. Eg: 03062009_170403

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Will do. I may not have time right after work as I have the daughter's Eighth Grade Commencement tonight :graduate: so it may be late tonight or at lunch tomorrow. Thanks!

I sat the impatient 11 year old down and said "google some stuff" No evidence of the naughty shows at this time. Since the infection occurred the evidence would have been glaring and immediate. The only issue is that when logging on to the user side an error box shows for "RUNDLL" with the message "Error Loading C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Adobe\voxcxsomw.dll The specified module could not be found"

I'm glad the module cannot be found :thumbup2: Just need to stop the error message and finish what we started. Thanks so much for your help!

Download a copy of HiJackThis.msi from here and save it to your Desktop

  • Double click HiJackThis.msi to begin installation.
  • You will need to accept the EULA to install the tool, so check the box and click Next.
  • Accept the installation location, which by default is C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis or click the Change... button if you want to choose somewhere else and then click Next
  • Once HJT has installed click Finish to finish - nice and clear this bit!
  • A shortcut will be handily created on your Desktop, so click it to begin.
  • When HJT opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
  • When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the Hijackthis folder for reference.
  • Copy and paste this into your next reply.

Create a log for both the accounts and make sure you mark which is which.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

First log is the admin account.....it ran no problem. Second log is the user account.......an error message popped up as it finished running and the log appeared. I closed the message before thinking about it (to much graduation party cake and noisy teenage girls in the house  ).....it still showed the log so maybe its not an issue

Good evening. :)

Starting with the uninfected account, run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1482476501-413027322-725345543-1004\..\Run: [Adobe] rundll32.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Adobe\voxcxsomw.dll",DllRegisterServer (User 'Dan')

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked

Then in the troublesome account do the same with:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Adobe] rundll32.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Adobe\voxcxsomw.dll",DllRegisterServer

You may find that the second fix won't be necessary as the line may be removed with the first step, but i'm not totally sure so you get to check to be on the safe side.

Assuming that the PC fails to self-destruct, or anything remotely smoke-emanatingly similar, see if that solves the error message that you have been seeing and let me know shortly thereafter.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
