Had a friend send me his laptop because it was infected and running rather slow. I installed Malbytes Anti-Malware and ran it, removing several trojans. However, alongside these a browser hijacker was installed and MBAM missed it. I've run Hijack this, as well as the requested programs so further logs are available if necessary. In addition, I tried to see if I could get the computer to run faster by defragging the hard drive or using Disk Cleanup, but neither program is in Start>Accessories>System Tools. In fact, the only way to do those actions is inside the cmd prompt, and even then, defrag errors out and closes saying that I have insufficient permissions followed by (0x89000024).

Also, I tried running GMER, but was unable to as every option except the bottom 3 (service, registry, and files) is greyed out.

Hello russ48934,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

  • Finally, please reply using the ADD REPLY button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

2.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
TdssKiller log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

I am, indeed, still here. I just finished running ComboFix, and it created the log, however it will no longer open a browser (including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc). Instead, it gives me an error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." with only an option to close that dialog box.

Sorry for the delay, I worked late last night.

EDIT: I posted this from a second, uninfected computer.

EDIT #2: The computer came up and asked to be restarted a second time, this time by Windows itself claiming there were system updates. It was an automatic restart so I let it go. Upon reboot, Windows would no longer start and is now asking, through the recovery console that was installed to be restored to an earlier restore point. I haven't gone any further.

Hello,

Please try and let it restart using Startup Repair. This may take several tries before it will restart normally.

So, I've restarted it 5 or 6 times now and it says Startup Repair cannot automatically repair. I've reported it, and it's still saying the same thing. Is this normal?

No, not at all. The screen will load with the windows logo - upon start up and then go black - as if it's turned off. Nothing else will load.

When you boot normally does it give you an option to do a System Restore?

As per previous instructions, I attempted to run in safe mode. The following error message appeared with a blue screen:

STOP: c0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Booting normally gives me the option to Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. No other options are available.
