Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a student and single mom and I just got into a pretty good university. I'm on a limitted budget but I am going to be needing a reliable laptop. It doesn't need to have good gaming capabilities. I will basically be using microsoft word, and doing online research, and maybe watching a movie or two since I don't plan on getting a tv. Anyhow, I'm not sure what I am looking for in terms of what processor, memmory, GB, etc. and was hoping that someone who read this would help me get an idea about these things. I'm looking on new egg, but open to suggestions where to buy from as well.

Hi, If you are in the USA?

What I do if I want a laptop is look at the online circulars for Staples, and Best Buy for example. And look at their sales on laptops. For example Staples has a Toshiba going on sale Sunday that looked decent.
Walmart would be another place to look for a inexpensive Laptop.

Or you could check out the circulars and see what is on sale until tonight.

Look for sales on Newegg http://www.newegg.com/ & TigerDirect. http://www.tigerdirect.com/
Back when Windows 7 had just been released I paid $329 for one I'm still using.

Bottom Line I suspect you can get a decent laptop for $300 to $400 that will do what you want.
One thing to watch out for if you go to a store to buy a computer is they will try to sell you junk like extended warranties, Optimization, Antivirus etc. Avoid these like the plague. If you were to want an extended warranty? Then only buy that from the laptop manufacturer. The ones the store sell require you to go back to the store for warranty service and that can be slow and loose all your data.

Yes you need an antivirus but the laptop will come with a trial version good for 30 to 90 days depending.

Good Luck
Roger

Excluding Gaming you can get a very nice laptop for that amount. Just make sure you don't get one you wouldn't have to carry around all day. They seem to get heavier as the day goes on.

Good Luck

Apple Z0ET MacBook - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz Processor - 1 GB RAM - 120 GB Hard Drive - Super Drive - 13.3-inch Display - OS X 10.5 Leopard - White

1 GB looks adequate for some internet surfing, email and writing, and then any more and I'd probably want to upgrade, which seems viable.

I want something that I am hopefully still going to be happy with a few years from now, as a school computer.

Check with the school and see if they have a preference for Apple or Microsoft Operating System.

BTW It is only a 90 day warranty..............

Apples are now getting viruses too as they proliferate they are becoming a target.

Not to mention you get better hardware for less with Windows computers a benefit of competition.

Thanks guys
I wound up getting Sony VAIO VPCEH3JFX/B Laptop Computer - Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.5" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black for $ 579.97

It cost a little more, but also I already have a sony vaio that I have been very happy with, except the port for the battery cable got all bashed up by my ex somehow. Still its been working like a charm for years.
