I have a Lenovo SL500 that won't shut down without pushing the shut off button.
Thank you

It's usually caused by a driver causing the system to hang, or possibly your antivirus performing a scan before shutdown.

Try running "System Restore" to wind back the clock to a time when the machine shutdown normally. Illustrated instructions here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/
