Hello All, I purchase my laptop a few months ago and immediately downloaded Avira Antivir (currently version 12.0.0.1125), Malwarebytes Anti- Malware (currently version 1.60.1, database up to date), and Comodo Firewall with defense+ (Up to date)...

The first few months my laptop loaded everything relatively smoothly, both online and offline, but now it seems that it sometimes has a bit of trouble buffering videos at a 20-50ms, 10mb/s wifi connection and loading pages on the web. (I use Internet Explorer v9.0.6)

I regularly perform scans on my computer, at least once every two weeks with both Avira and MBAM at seperate times but from the day of purchase to today, my computer has randomly frozen (5-10 times) and sometimes will not shut down (shows that it is shutting down for long periods of time without actually doing it). Also, I've noticed a few times that my lap top will start to move VERY slow, with just one simple proccess or no proccesses running, including updates.

I do often visit torrent sites and download torrents, so I suspect that I might have picked up some malware through one of them. I've done maybe 6 scans with both Avira and MBAM each this past week and both have shown that my computer is clear, except Avira is saying that it is finding 65 hidden files, which I think probably contains the malware.

Specs: Model- ASUS Notebook P43E/P53E series
Processor- Intel Core i5-2430M CPU @ 2.4GHz
Installed Memory (RAM)- 4.00 GB
System Type- 64-bit Operating System
OS- Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1
Graphics Card- Intel HD Graphics 3000

Please let me know what other information you require from me, thank you all

Hi,

After performing these scans, enter the results in your next post and also update me on the status of the PC.

Note: You may have to perform some or all of the following in Safe Mode With Networking, depending on if you have internet access while in the normal Windows environment. If you still don't have internet access in Safe Mode With Networking, you will need to download the installers onto a flash drive from a working computer and transfer them to the problem PC.

Also, if you have any of the following programs already installed on your machine, download the latest version along with updates, then run the scan.

================================================================================

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

================================================================================

Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use SUPERAntiSpyware to scan and remove malware from your computer Guide.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all other options as they are set):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the Control Center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Select Scan Type" check the box for Complete Scan.
  • If your computer is badly infected, be sure to check the box next to Enable Rescue Scan (Highly Infected Systems ONLY).
  • Click the Scan your computer... button.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the scan log after reboot, launch SUPERAntiSpyware again.
  • Click the View Scan Logs button at the bottom.
  • This will open the Scanner Logs Window.
  • Click on the log to highlight it and then click on View Selected Log to open it.
  • Copy and paste the scan log results in your next reply.
-- Some types of malware will disable security tools. If SUPERAntiSpyware will not install, please refer to these instructions for using the SUPERAntiSpyware Installer. If SUPERAntiSpyware is already installed but will not run, then follow the instructions for using RUNSAS.EXE to launch the program.
================================================================================

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Posted Image and save it to your desktop.
  • Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.
Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A: 4. Issues.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

-- Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that's the case, go to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes Anti-Malware folder > Tools > click on Malwarebytes Chameleon and follow the onscreen instructions. The Chameleon folder can be accessed by opening the program folder for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).
================================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning

Here are the results:

Note: when I tried to install SUPERAnti Spyware it gave me this message: "File copy error, aborting installation" (it downloaded without a problem though)I tried turning off my firewall and antivirus when downloading, and when installing.

The other program downloads, installations, and runs went off without a hitch however.

Try installing SAS in Sade Mode.

How to Access Safe Mode

While the computer is turning on, tap F8 repeatedly until a black screen with white text appears. Using your arrow keys highlight the option Safe Mode and hit Enter.

It won't work in safemode, it gives the message when it gets to this portion of the installation:

Copying files...
C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSypware\PROCESSLIST.DB

This message will come up after the first attempt of installation in normal mode, but not after any subsequent attempts

I tried reinstalling it and it wouldn't give me the message again, so I did a complete search on my computer for anything superantispyware and waited for the search to complete, then deleted all of it, then redownloaded it from the internet, and it installed and scanned without a hitch (I was sure to turn all my other defenses off) Here are the results:

I've had no problems so far after the scan with my computer shutting down (only tried twice), but prior to the scan the shutting down and freezing had become a little more frequent.
I had no Idea that much harmful adware was on my lap top, thought MBAM would find all of that...

No, one piece of software does not always cover everything.

So no freezing?

If you're still unsure, let's try this:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If you're satisfied, then you're welcome.

Alright, the scan took a little over an hour, not too bad... here is the result:

C:\Users\Zaman\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\5TATOY0E\selena-justin_blogspot_com[1].htm JS/Redirector.NII trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

can't imagine where that came from, maybe a torrent site... do you reccomend using ESET often?

I recommend an ESET scan at the end of a malware removal process, but it's not something that you have to do regularly.

Below are some instructions for logs and other information I'll need to continue.

But note the following isn't removing any malicious items, it's simply some things to get the computer running a bit faster.

The first thing we'll be doing is disabling some programs from launching at startup that aren't wanted and/or necessary.

Next is deleting the contents of two temporary folders in Windows that may be taking up room that can be cleared out.

The last is getting information about your computer, but I'm mostly focusing on the make, model, and amount of RAM to be able to suggest any cheap and simple hardware upgrades that could be made.

----------------------------------------------------

Click Start.

In the search bar, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter. Click the "Startup" tab.

Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

----------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.

----------------------------------------------------

Click Start.

In the search bar type msinfo32 and hit Enter.

Copy and paste this information and put it in your next post.
