My dad's netbook is having troubles connecting to the internet using his netbook

Asus Aspire One D255

When he clicks on the icon at the bottom right of the screen, it says that it cannot find any networks.
We have 2 routers broadcasting, so i dont think that is the problem.

The 2 error messages i am able to find are:
system notification bubble:

"Failed to connect to a windows service

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the system event log for details about why the service didn't respond."

Network and Sharing Center:
(At the top, where it would show the networks)
"Unknown
The dependency service or group failed to start"

The last 2 things I am going to talk about are things in the "SERVICES" program.

"System Event Notification Service" Seems to be stuck in a "Starting" Status, which makes me unable to start or stop it.

The last thing is the Network Location Awareness service. It is turned off, and when i try to start it, it gives me the error "Windows could not start the Network Location Awareness service on local computer. Error 5: Access is denied.

First, start your computer in Safe Mode with networking.
To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Immediately affter the BIOS logo, press F8 a few times in rapid succession.
  • Choose 'Safe Mode with networking'
  • See if your issue is resolved.

If your issue is resolved in Safe Mode, restart your computer normally, then..
Open a command prompt as an administrator and run sfc /scannow. Post back with your results.

When he clicks on the icon at the bottom right of the screen, it says that it cannot find any networks.
We have 2 routers broadcasting, so i dont think that is the problem.

The very first thing I must ask is - - Has this computer Ever been connected to either of these networks ? ?
Also have you attempted to connect directly with an ethernet cable ? ?

All the details that I can find -- - -
You should be able to get the necessary drivers from Acer via click HERE:
In the above link choose Netbook > Aspire One > AOD255. Then select 'Windows 7 Ultimate x32' next to Operating System (you installed the 32-bit version, right?).
To be up-to-date, download & install the following:
- Chipset Driver
- Audio Driver
- LAN Driver
- VGA Driver
- Wireless LAN Driver
- Anything else you think is applicable, but once online you can download them directly on the netbook
If the netbook has no optical drive, you must have a USB flash drive in order to transfer the necessary files to the netbook.
Once you have them on the netbook, unzip the files one at a time & click on their executable (usually Setup) to install. If some don't have any executable, let us know & we'll tell you how to install them

It used to be connected to the networks, but then my dad took it for a trip to the US. During his stay there, he one day couldnt connect to anything, and had this problem here.

It will not connect using an Ethernet cord either.

I have tried to update the drivers(i wanted to get that out of the way before i came here), but still no success.

Check below link:

http://chaosmachineit.blogspot.in/2008/07/unable-to-initialize-windows-sockets.html

The author of the article describes repairing the winsock using command prompt (possibly in elevated mode, i.e. run as administrator):

The first command he used didn't help which was sfc /scannow

However, the second command (given below) worked!  netsh winsock reset

Based on guest comments, it seems this worked for a lot of people.
